I am excited for this. It gives me Titane vibes... Those who have seen it do you agree?

Julia and Coralie definitely work on the same wavelength and are similarly radical in their movie making. I'd say this is more campy and gory than Titane, but they definitely share a spirit and would make an INSANE double feature.

So, so silly. But Margaret Qualley is the queen of pop

Demi Moore was phenomenal, this is a TEOM/Believe/COTDF level comeback. I didn't notice how two hours had passed, the movie took my breath away.

People saying they hated the ending and that was my favorite part nnnn. Feels like the movie was holding back at times for the sake of "realism" and it was fun to see it embrace the absurdity.

Totally! I also got huge TFTC and Beyond Belief teas from this, specifically that BB episode where a Karen gets cursed and starts seeing her own reflection in the mirror as disfigured.

For me, I really enjoyed the film for it's ageism and self-hating analogies, and the film never felt like a comedy until then, but by the end they went so over the top that I felt they threw all the great story development they had acheived so far, just for the sake of being gory and campy.

Hmm, I think there's plenty of gore and campiness the whole way  But as for story development and the ending, I think there's a lot of important commentary in the final act, despite the level of gore.

Spoiler

For example, Monstro Elisasue spreads her blood all over the audience not just for the camp factor, but to implicate every member of the audience (and the media big wigs sitting in the audience) in her mental and bodily deterioration. If she just fell apart/died on stage, that would still communicate that the standards killed her, but then the audience is not implicated; by spraying blood on *everyone*, we get a different, more complex message about how fans participate in the toxic expectations for women in media, not just the execs. (Plus, the bloody stage scene seems to be a somewhat obvious nod to Carrie, who punishes all her classmates who stood by and watched her abuse/laughed at it, and I love that connection!)

The final scene with the face crawling is indeed campy, but it is also one of the most trenchant images of Elisabeth's obsession with fame (til the VERY end!). The way she is washed off the star by the street cleaner is a very simple and effective way to comment on how little care is given to her as a human being (the people value her celebrity, but not her humanity), but simultaneously how she really can never "die" entirely since the star represents her permanence in the entertainment industry. I don't find that very comedic personally, and think the last 15 minutes are actually some of the most poignant of the film.

the kitchen scene happens like 20 minutes before that and its the campiest bit of the movie imo

Yeah, there's a lot of gore and campiness during the whole movie, but it fits right into the story, and goes according to the logic of the film, so I could keep my suspension of disbelief from most of the film.

Spoiler

And yeah, I got the social criticism of her spraying blood on everyone, but they could've made it work in some other way (Just for example: she is in the star street and everyone is gathered around her wanting to touch her before her face reveal, and then she starts detereorating or having blood coming out of her staining everyone around, without having her throw blood like she was a hose. I got they were trying to make a Carrie reference, but at least that film justified the blood within the story).

I dare to say if it wasn't for the ending, this could've been a strong contender for best screenplay at this awards season.

I think my main quibble was that the film spends a lot of time trying to straddle some line between "real" and absurd and toward the end you can tell where they start leaning more on the absurdism as a contrivance in service of setting the stage for that ending (which, granted, I mostly really liked. I can't remember the last time I screamed like that during a movie :rip:).

Reminds me a bit of the third act of The Cabin in the Woods which also goes full gonzo, but there the plotting felt sharper and slightly less obvious in its machinations.

Still liked this movie a lot though! Probably my second fave of the year so far. Exceedingly well shot and acted, and a great film score too!

Easily the most absurd part of the film is

Spoiler

in the very last scene, where she looks up at the night sky in LA and can see the stars :rip:

this is SO excellent omg. I don't think it'll take any awards because people are not ready for a horror comedy on this level of deranged but it FULLY DESERVES because it absolutely nails the vibe so well ahh

gurl, it's ridiculous from the very beginning

even if you look past the vision of her splitting literally into two, there's no way she can stitch her own spine together with no surgical training and not get an infection
