Chinese court recognizes two legal mothers in landmark queer ruling

A Beijing court has granted visiting rights to a woman seeking access to her daughter, marking the first time a Chinese court has recognised that a child can have two legal mothers.

The ruling represents a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in China, where same-sex marriage remains unrecognised.

Quote

his ruling comes at a time when China's LGBTQ+ community faces increasing challenges. In recent years, several prominent LGBTQ+ organisations have been forced to cease operations. These include ShanghaiPride, the country's largest Pride event, which has been suspended since 2021.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of growing social acceptance. A recent survey [PDF] by the Williams Institute at UCLA found that 85% of respondents had favourable attitudes towards same-sex parents, and nearly 90% supported same-sex marriage.

If it was a step forward for LGBTQ rights,  they'd have recognized her son too. this is just a step forward for surrogate rights.

Didi and her wife, who were married in the US in 2016, underwent IVF treatment using the wife's eggs and donor sperm. Didi gave birth to a girl in 2017, while her wife gave birth to a boy.

After the couple's relationship broke down in 2019, Didi's wife took both children to live with her in Beijing, cutting off contact with Didi. In March 2020, Didi filed what is believed to be China's first same-sex custody dispute.

In May 2024, the Beijing Fengtai People's Court ruled that Didi should be allowed monthly visits with her daughter. However, the ruling highlights the complexities of LGBTQ+ family arrangements in China, as Didi was not granted contact with her son, to whom she has no biological connection.

There is more important information that could have been included in the OP. :rip:

The whole thing is more messy than it looks.

so this has everything to do with the fact that she's the biological mother and nothing to do with them being a queer couple (which also isn't true given the fact that they're not together anymore) :rip:

It's a step BACKWARDS for people not genetically related to their children. Aka, a lot of queer people. Wonder why we're trying to be convinced the opposite.

And she was granted visitation rights to her biological child only. She isn't allowed to contact the other child. Curious how all of this got left out

Yes, occupation. Hong Kongers did not vote to hand the sovereignty over to China.

UK and China were in the deal and Hong Kongers were not. None of the HKers gave them the right to do so.

Approximately 2 million Uyghurs in the concentration camps and there are witnesses. What is China afraid of to let people investigate, or not even have a look?

Taiwan is not China. Hong Kong is not China. Either speaking or the writing system is different.

Hong Kong: Cantonese speaking + Traditional Chinese writing

Taiwan: Mandarin and Taiwanese speaking + Traditional Chinese writing

China: Mandarin speaking + Simplified Chinese writing

Hong Kongers and Taiwanese use different passports, currencies, political systems, have their own Olympic teams etc.

Tibet is also not China's. Tibetans will be free.:heart2:

Love it or not, that's the worst regime in the world. Killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined, a Guinness world record and you're advocating that. :heart2:

Some countries are good by default and other countries are bad by default, so all information and news we receive must be filtered through this lens in such a way that we can confirm our existing narratives about these countries.
