Virgos Groove Posted August 14 Posted August 14 Quote A public dispute between Elon Musk and the EU has sharpened concerns in Europe about its ability to wield power over the sprawling social media platform X at a time when disinformation and deepfakes have helped to fuel political discord and an outbreak of UK rioting. Quote At the same time, the EU's Digital Services Act brought the bloc fresh powers to enforce sweeping rules in areas such as disinformation and advertising, including a penalty that one official who worked on the rules called a "nuclear weapon": removing access to a social network across the region. Quote Officials working with X in Brussels have said the company has been largely responsive during the commission's investigation. Yet Goanta added that even if X wanted to comply with the DSA, it might struggle to fulfil its obligations — particularly when policing non-English content — after moderation teams were slashed. X in April said it employed just one content moderator with professional proficiency in Latvian and Polish, for example, and none in Dutch. Quote Jan Philipp Albrecht, president of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung think-tank and a former EU lawmaker, said the bloc should consider toughening its approach to social media platforms by making them subject to libel law in the same way as media outlets, which themselves can be held accountable for content alongside its authors. More broadly, he said: "We can't stand there and wait for Musk to get back to a mature behaviour. We have to make sure he adheres to the rule of law." Financial Times Spoiler + A really good video on the situation. Not a primary source, but more or less sums up the situation. Please_Please_Please.mp3 ban it. Gazillionaires already have way too much power on society. We don't need them spreading misinformation and far-right talking points, let alone being treated like a "government". They're companies. If they don't comply with the law, they get kicked out (or expropriated! ). That's how it should be. 9
Sheep Posted August 14 Posted August 14 fElon only bought it to interfere with US elections so this might actually happen 1

We can all move to Threads At this point, Europe needs its own social media companies. With the exception of TikTok, all the top social media companies in the continent are American. Obviously, a social media platform being Euro-owned doesn't make it completely unsusceptible to political interference (European capitalists still exist!), but some sovereignty wouldn't hurt. P.O.P Posted August 15 Posted August 15 (edited) I am against censorship/bans. No ifs no buts. I would like to see everyone leaving X and stop buying Tesla why are you all on that trash platform again and why don't you bully your favs away from it already Edited August 15 by P.O.P 1
Peroxide Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Lovvvvve me some TLDR, I watched this earlier… I'd welcome this thing getting wiped out for good. Between this (assuming it goes through) and advertisers pulling out… that will cut off vital oxygen for Elon. LETS GO BRUSSELS.

Elusive Chanteuse Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Is it normal for an organization to have this much power? ban it but kinda scary honestly

It's not just normal, it's necessary.
stevyy Posted August 17 Posted August 17 my hatred for Elon is so strong and growing by the seconds. I've never loathed an individual more in my life. end her.
Jormungand Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Here for it. It was never about free speech, that's the fantasy Elon sold his fanboys. No one should have this level of power if they're not going to be responsible with it. Elon and his fanboys really think we should hand the keys to Elon his cabal and he'll just "save humanity" meanwhile his companies are repeatedly polluting the water in Texas, something he couldn't do in Cali. This is the same man that said he could get civilization on Mars in 10 years, it's been 12 years+ and counting. Elon is what happens when you spoil your children rotten, give them no love and attention, and allow them to become drug addicts without getting them the critical therapy they desperately needed in their formative years. Now we're left with this insecure megalomaniac billionaire man-child cosplaying a US citizen in a state that's already hostile with the Feds. A literal ticking time bomb, but they only listen when it's too late
