Communion Posted August 13 Posted August 13 The pollster also found Harris tied with Trump in the battleground states polled, reiterating the importance of pushing progressive policies to drive turnout amongst thr base. 1
KatyPrismSpirit Posted August 13 Posted August 13 If you want free college and affordable housing you should definitely not vote republican 2
WildAmerican Posted August 13 Posted August 13 then we gotta elect more progressive senators and house members too

One has to wonder why given the sheer popularity of these policies.
byzantium Posted August 13 Posted August 13 I cannot speak for the sun belt or the southern states, but I feel pretty strongly that if you want to shore up the Midwest and make places like Ohio and Iowa purple again, the democrats need to pivot left, not right.

beautiful player Posted August 13 Posted August 13 Pretty sure most of this is already what the Dems are campaigning on. So I don't see why this is threadworthy. We been knew.

Let climate change wisen us up in AZ, we're too busy shouting "don't California my Arizona" right now. /s AZ is packed with moderates who will flock back to the Republican Party once we stop running candidates like Kari Lake and Trump. But there's also a huge amount of untapped disenfranchised Latino voters in west Phoenix who will likely offset that balance with the right messaging and outreach— just see Bernie's popularity with Latino voters. But basically **** the Sun Belt for right now, they'll follow along with the Dems once these policies gain more traction and the realities of what's possible are finally revealed to them. But the Dems need to get on it because as high as these poll numbers are for these policies, I guarantee so many of them will go even higher once people understand that they're not radical at all; they're very possible and we've just been fed lies our whole lives being told that they're not.
Virgos Groove Posted August 13 Posted August 13 Soc-dems/dem-socs in the US desperately need their own party (a la the Progressive Party of the 1940s), but FPTP and the electoral college make that impossible. The US and UK's electoral systems are so rigged. 1
Leppie Posted August 13 Posted August 13 How much of this could Kamala Harris promise and actually implement? Wouldn't she need full control of the house and super majority in the senate to pass any of this? (I'm not American) 1

(I'm not American) Yes, but given California can't even pass universal Healthcare a super majority would guarantee nothing in terms of Medicare For All Maybe a public option/medicare expansion? Even that would be hard to pass with 60 Democrats, but possible I suppose yet unlikely. They couldn't even get all 50 Democrats to vote in favor of the 15$ minimum wage a couple years ago 2

(I'm not American) A simple majority of 50+1 (VP) is needed to pass several items through the reconciliation process if Tim Walz, as VP, ignored the Senate Parliamentarian and allowed the vote to proceed. What will haunt Harris is that many of her own views are unknown and what she's co-signed during her role as VP to Biden were items Biden and her supported in language yet then called on the Congressional Dems to either drop from bills or strip from legislation to appease Republicans to pass other agendas they wanted more. Quote a new tax of 0.5% on stock trades, a 0.1% fee on bond trades and a 0.005% fee on derivatives. Feel free to read the Free College for All legislation introduced by Sanders into the Senate and Jayapal into the House.
