It's sad for real

What is the point to make suspense and noise about an upcoming release if after the second day it's out in the US

Where is the promo? The radio airplays? The buzz? The live performances?

The promo that matters is there. His face is plastered all over Spotify, he's the cover and top song on most NMF iterations. Music video is also out

The airplay is also happening. It didn't have an hourly deal, but it impacted both pop and HAC radios upon release and it's already charting on both formats

As for the buzz, it should be there. He's been in the game for a decade and he has a fanbase. The label probably expected (reasonably) that he could carry a comeback single off of his own momentum for a couple of days. The fact that he can't is... kind of a Shawn problem

I'm not saying this in a shady way, but the bottom allegations really ruined his career. :ducky:

Depends who you ask. That made him a HIT in my bedroom :gaycat2:

I think the Rolling Stone interview where he recounts having a panic attack and storming out of the theatre while watching Love, Simon, directly followed by 2 years worth of staged paparazzi pics of him making out with Camila ruined his career.

The bottom allegations were perfectly alright in terms of branding. The entire line-up of Viners that he came up with had similar rumors and so did all pop boys with a teen following: One Direction, BTS, all of them. Those rumors don't alienate their female following, on the contrary, they are created and sustained by their female following. They love it!

Nothing to do with the gay rumors. He benefited from only having Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth as pop boys peers for years. It's so clear that once Harry hit the scene and the K-Pop boy group scene grew exponentially in the West those boys' popularity all gone shaky. Even Ed that used be way more successful is not seeing big numbers these days. Shawn never quite recovered, especially because he's the blandest of them all (Charlie IS a writer and Bieber is the sole icon from that era). It's been diminishing returns ever since and he lacks the technique and chops to even rebrand himself as a sort of pop boy John Mayer. If anything Señorita and Camila extended his shelf-life as a celebrity for a whole year. Also that Benson boy is clearly occupying that lane of mediocre boy singer-songwriter for now

The fact that he managed to debut with over 2m streams with no promo is still a good sign. He's got a solid fanbase still but it's obvious that his fanbase is not one that will stream the song non-stop for days like other artists. For comparison, WWW debuted on par with Selena's latest single and one of them didn't have Spotify's biggest playlist (Shawn).

We cannot blame him for not being able to stay on Spotify top 200 for a second day when it's not getting promo. Maybe the song has not clicked enough, or maybe he needs promo to stay afloat, which is not bad either.

Shawn is past his peak and he doesn't spark the same interest he did years ago. He also needed tons of promo to smash when he was at his peak so what makes you think he can smash now on his own?

By the way, I don't know what his ambitions are for this era but if he's in this "I don't care about charts" mindset, then Island Records won't give a **** about him. Island Records will only care about you if you are willing to play the game.

But for the comparison thing, this is a comeback single. And Love On served as a follow up single for Single Soon, that was really saw as the comeback single. Single Soon debuted with almost 4,4M, so it's no comparable at all.

The reason I compared it to Love On is because it's the most recent single by a big artist with bigger promo but similar numbers. We can compare it to Single Soon and it's not bad either as it did half of what Single Soon did with no promo, so if Shawn had got more promo he could've done a lot better.
