Iraq plans to introduce Sharia law, legalize marrying off 9-year old girls + polygamy

The proposed amendment to Iraq's 1959 Personal Status Law No. 188 would allow people to decide that all matters related to personal status be governed on the basis of Shiite or Sunni jurisprudence. It has been mainly pushed forward by the Co-ordination Framework – a coalition of Islamist Shiite parties that form the largest bloc in parliament.

The current law is considered to be the most protective of women's rights in the Middle East. It was passed in 1959 by "specialists, lawyers, all religious heads, and experts and this was one of the best laws in the Middle East", [Women's Rights Activist] Ms Al Assam said, arguing that the majority of those currently in power in Iraq lack the expertise to enact changes.

Ms Al Hassani said this move is seen as a package deal between Sunni and Shia politicians who are bargaining their way towards passing two of the draft bills.

In contrast to the existing statutes, Shiite Jaafari sharia law sets the legal age of marriage at nine for girls, and 15 for boys—down from the current age of 18.

The Jaafari school allows a man to legitimately seek a divorce if a woman withholds conjugal relations, and also permits polygamy—practices currently restricted under the 1959 civil code.

The announcement of the bill was followed by a statement from the Islamic Da'wa Party claiming that the proposed measures are liberatory, and "the product of generous sacrifices by free Iraqis from all social groups."

Some brave Iraqis have taken to protest the law, but as you can see in the video linked in this article, turnout was very low and the amendment is likely to pass:

Hasn't this always been legal? I've been hearing about little girls getting "married" in the middle east since I was a kid myself.

It has always been illegal in Iraq (not sure what specific countries you heard about), but of course it was still happening in secret, with the rates strongly increasing in past years. This bill would officially legalize the practice

I mean, at the foundation of Islam is a guy that married and raped a literal kid so can anyone suprised? Absolutely horrifying, the far-right religous ME countries continue to be hellholes on earth. I wonder what's gonna have to happen for that to change.

Girrrll who did that? :rip:

Disgusting.

A reminder that several European Countries were able to shake off their authoritarian governments and install Democracy in the 1980s and 1990s.

I sometimes wonder when the Iraq GP will rise up and says: ENOUGH.

When many many many MILLIONS of people turn to the streets, no type of government can survive... but I know that it is dangerous and that a lot of people would die... But its been so long now that Iraq and the likes have been this messy.

I did. That's why I was asking that question sis. Because that DID not happen. Probably the biggest lie told and usually spread by anti-Islamic people.

Here is the text of the hadith in the original language, including the phrase "6 years old" which is unchanged in modern Arabic so it should be understandable to you if you know any Arabic (since I'm not sure which country you are from), hope this helps
