Update: Ksenia Karelina, a dual American-Russian citizen, was sentenced Thursday to 12 years in a Russian penal colony on treason charges.

Russian-American dual citizen Ksenia Karelina has pleaded guilty in a Russian court to a charge of treason, state news agency RIA quoted her lawyer as saying on Wednesday.

Karelina is a Los Angeles resident and amateur ballerina who was born in Russia but emigrated to the United States in 2012. She became a US citizen in 2021. The Los Angeles spa employee was faces a sentence of 12 years to life in prison if convicted.

Karelina, who was not included in a major prisoner swap between Russia and the West last week, is on trial in the city of Yekaterinburg over a donation she made in 2022.

She was arrested by the FSB security service after flying to Russia to visit her family in Yekaterinburg at the start of the year.

Investigators brought the treason charge after discovering on her mobile phone that she had donated $51.80 to Razom, US charity that provides aid to Ukraine, when Russia invaded its neighbour in February 2022. The FSB alleged that the ultimate beneficiary was the Ukrainian army.

She entered Russia in January but the US did not learn of her arrest until February 8.

Her boyfriend had bought her ticket to visit the country as a birthday gift.

This is why absolutely no one should go to Russia. I feel like at some point the US just needs to tell its citizens who travel there that they will be on their own if imprisoned

Or just ban US citizens from traveling there.  The fact that we release actual convicted Russian felons to free random Americans is messed up and completely avoidable.  Americans should just flat out not go there, period.

it's probably even worse for many Russians. there were reports about 21-year-old student sentenced to 9 years after donating $30; 19-year-old sentenced to 12 years in a strict penal colony; 27-year-old teacher sentenced to 5 years in prison and 15 more in a strict-regime penal colony for a transfer of $250 to his brother in Ukraine, 36-year-old woman sentenced to 12 years in prison for donating $58...
