Virgos Groove Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Quote A judge on Monday ruled that Google's ubiquitous search engine has been illegally exploiting its dominance to squash competition and stifle innovation, a seismic decision that could shake up the internet and hobble one of the world's best-known companies. The highly anticipated decision issued by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta comes nearly a year after the start of a trial pitting the U.S. Justice Department against Google in the country's biggest antitrust showdown in a quarter century. Quote "After having carefully considered and weighed the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly," Mehta wrote in his 277-page ruling. He said Google's dominance in the search market is evidence of its monopoly. Google "enjoys an 89.2% share of the market for general search services, which increases to 94.9% on mobile devices," the ruling said. Associated Press 1

Suilen Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I guess everyone was fine with it before, but now that it's AI-driven trash, the facade is crumbling.
State of Grace. Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Get her, Mehta. The first page is literally ******* garbage. I really hate using it now. 1
Bosque Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Monopolies are usually bad for consumers, but sadly Google is the best search engine by far. If they want to avoid this, they should make the alternatives more appealing. I've been using Perplexity a lot recently to replace some Google searches, and the results are quite impressive
piotrert Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Yeah, I figured it out when my all selenium tests were broken because of new pop up in chrome.

Bosque Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Just now, Cesar said: its quite hard for other search engines to rise, given that google pays companies so they could be the default search engine. the only way is if you go out of ur way and changing it Oh I agree they have definitely used their monopoly power and network to unfairly suppress competitors. So this is a good ruling but it's also important to make the alternatives more attractive
Superbitch Posted August 6 Posted August 6 But the question what even is close to be as good as Google to search,
StayFrosty Posted August 6 Posted August 6 I was literally just googling how many spawns Felon Must has birthed from his accursed loins and the ai response was 12 but the first article said 11. The good sis Duck Duck go would NEVER.
