SoldierofLove Posted July 29 Posted July 29 U.S. President Joe Biden is unveiling a long-awaited proposal for changes at the U.S. Supreme Court, calling on Congress to establish term limits and an ethics code for the court's nine justices. He also is pressing lawmakers to ratify a constitutional amendment that would limit presidential immunity. Biden is calling for doing away with lifetime appointments to the court. He says Congress should pass legislation to establish a system in which the sitting president would appoint a justice every two years to spend 18 years in service on the court. He argues term limits would help ensure that court membership changes with some regularity and adds a measure of predictability to the nomination process. He also wants Congress to pass legislation establishing a court code of ethics that would require justices to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity and recuse themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have financial or other conflicts of interest. Biden also is calling on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment reversing the Supreme Court's recent landmark immunity ruling that determined former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution. The first three justices who would potentially be affected by term limits are on the right. Justice Clarence Thomas has been on the court for nearly 33 years. Chief Justice John Roberts has served for 19 years, and Justice Samuel Alito has served for 18. https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/world/biden-unveils-plan-for-supreme-court-changes-says-u-s-stands-at-breach-as-public-confidence-sinks-1.6981070 Coming for Clarence Thomas His time is up! 6 7
Princess Aurora Posted July 29 Posted July 29 This was supposed to happen many years ago, not now Anyway it was about time someone had the will to suggest it. 4
Hector Posted July 29 Posted July 29 This should have been implemented ages ago. And the Supreme Court remains frustrating as many of the demons there weren't elected by the public so America will have to live by the ramifications caused by T***p for decades to come. 11 3
Gladiator Posted July 29 Posted July 29 (edited) These are great but I do not foresee this happening while republicans have control of any body of congress (like they do for the house). Edited July 29 by Gladiator 3
stjosephprey4us Posted July 29 Posted July 29 What do you mean "calls for". My dear, you are the president it's time to start exercising them executive orders 2 4
beautiful player Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Too little, too late The time for this was in 2021 when he had a bit more momentum. But he wanted to be all kumbaya with the fascists. Now let's hope the far left doesn't sabotage the Dems in the upcoming election, so the American people can vote in a strong blue congress that is actually capable of passing these kind of reforms. 1 1 2

You think the Executive branch can just steam roll over the Judicial branch and impose term limits by Ed executive order? 3

This is a worthless call. It would be more meaningful if Kamala is leading the charge on this issue. 2

nadiamendell Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Cute how he's just throwing all of these progressive ideas out now that his presidency is almost over and he has no chance of getting them implemented. Such courage! 3 1 1

Happylittlepunk Posted July 29 Posted July 29 He should say **** it let me end this term by being progressive as ****. This is a little too late but there other policies who can do that much easier that can implement before he leaves 1
Sprite Posted July 29 Posted July 29 (edited) Isn't the Supreme Court in the Constitution...? You can't change that especially in today's divided Congress. Edited July 29 by Sprite
