'I felt unsafe': Locals welcome Spain's crackdown on holiday rentals

Spain is finding innovative ways to cut down on tourist apartments, even banning them completely in some places.

In Spanish cities suffering from overtourism, rules have slowly been introduced to help regulate numbers, including limits on the number of tourist rentals.

Despite this, statistics from the Spanish government show that the number of tourist apartments has increased by nine per cent in the last year, with more than 340,000 now registered. This means in some cities there is one tourist rental for every 1.5 square kilometre and for every 139 locals.

But tourist overcrowding is just part of the issue. The other side is Spain's severe housing crisis, which means fewer and fewer people can afford increasing rents and purchase prices. Many young people in particular can't get access to accommodation and are forced to live at home well into their 30s.

Quote

Just a couple of weeks ago, Barcelona announced the most drastic step yet - the intention to eliminate all tourist rentals by 2028. This was met with a mixed response from both local Catalans and the city's large foreign-born population, which has now reached 25 per cent.

Quote

Majority of tourist rentals are owned by big businesses

Some people argue that eliminating tourist apartments means locals won't have the chance to make money from their properties and create their own income to benefit from tourism. But the truth is that mainly big businesses own most of the properties, not individuals.

For example, according to Barcelona City Council, only 34.8 per cent of tourist licence holders own only one apartment, the rest have five or more.

If only Lisbon and Porto had the balls to do this.

Girl, Europeans literally invaded 80% of the world.

Do you think the people propping up mass tourism and AirBNB economies are descendants of the victims of colonialism? :psyduck:

The vast majority of people from South America and Africa aren't visiting European cities, so your "colonialists getting invaded back" framing is wrong.

In 2021, tourists from Belgium topped the list of international visitors to Paris. With 11% of the total number of visitors, followed by the United Kingdom with 10% of total visits. The United States with 9% of total visits, the Netherlands with 8% of total visits, and Germany with 8% of total visits. (x)

It's mostly other Europeans or Americans taking advantage of cheap rentals, which is making life harder for the locals.

Native Americans and Black Americans, absolutely. But white Americans are colonialists themselves. :dies:

Airbnbs are cancer. Never stayed at one nor plan to do so xx. I live in a popular city in Mexico and it's the same here, renting is flat out impossible.

I mean, are they? They live in a rich country with no culture, no good food, no healthcare, no interesting history. Europe is the only place they can go to if they want to experience all that.

This seems a bit... much. :dies: Yes, there is no "white" culture, but saying America has no culture on a website dedicated to pop music, which is mostly US-centric, is a bit ridiculous. (Though a lot of those contributions come from Black America, which white Americans appropriate and fail to credit, but that's whole another conversation.) The US is a large country with lots to see. There are massive cities, natural parks, etc., etc.

And yes, white Americans are absolutely colonialists. They're the ruling race of the world's biggest superpower.

Isn't tourism like a huge chunk of Spain's economy?

Holiday rentals are a scam perpetrated by mafia business owners who want to slip through the grey legal areas and not spend their money on building hotels.

Find something else to speculate with than with people's homes! :sistrens:

are you ******* dumb? do you really think it is native americans basically colonising whole parts of south europe? It is very much white middle classes from America and North Europe doing this. The very same colonisers, just in different ways now.

I hope the same happens in Lisbon and Porto soon.

Ban AirBnB and short holiday rentals, cancel that awful 'digital nomad' robbery, build more actual homes and introduce rent caps. It's what is needed.

Otherwise, riots will certainly start happening. People are being thrown out of their homes and moved out of the cities for this shite. Enough

I used to live in Paris, and yes, there's too many tourists and locals aren't prioritised, but a huge amount of the economy and job market is based on tourism

So there isn't really anything to do about it :skull: I think the most realistic outcome is that people will have to live with that cities like Barcelona, Paris and so on, are mostly for very rich locals or tourists, unfortunately.

Oop.

The government here in Portugal tried to implement some pretty minor restrictions (like having to register AirBNBs), and the rental owners lost their minds. The tax evasion that happens in these kinds of businesses is insane and needs to cracked down on.

!!!

There are people with jobs who still can't afford rent and are being forced into homelessness.

Lisbon is basically Disneyland at this point and Porto isn't far behind. I interned in the latter last year (didn't move to the city, but commuted every day) and was amazed at the sheer ammount of tourists there are. The city is unrecognizable. :psyduck:

Not that this even matters because atp every ethnic group still standing has colonized and been colonized before. People still upset at the US occupying Japan 70 years ago but ignore the fact Japan colonized the whole Pacific Ocean :celestial5: go back even further the Japanese population we know now colonized the native population of Japan when they went over and north. One day the US will be "colonized" too, just like they colonized the Native American groups who "colonized" each other. It's a never ending cycle, just looks different now because of globalization.
