Critics pan Woman's World: The Guardian 1/5, Pitchfork: "A monumental catastrophe"

The overreactions and obsessing over a Katy Perry single in 2024 pretty much means that she's still a top pop girl even though she hasn't had a smash hit in 10 years.

Give her the right song and the gays will switch as always. :fan:

There is nothing about Break My Soul that I would rank eons above a song like Stupid Love or Woman's World to the point of being absolutely superb and a discography highlight :michael:

All 3 of those songs are pretty much just rather average, safe playing, and nothing worth ever debating as one of their best songs. I think that is pretty universal too.

So as I was saying, the absolute difference in reception between artists when they release songs like this just shows critical/publications are a mess in 2024. I do agree Woman's World is a weak song, but also panning it to this point especially after I have seen the level of praise for similar songs from other artists is funny.

You're comparing Break My Soul, a house renaissance, to Stupid Love and Woman's World?

It's definitely a weak song, but tbh I started thinking how it reminds me of "Break My Soul" and pondered exactly how Beyonce got such universal acclaim with also a dated 2016 sounding Dance-Pop empowerment song as her comeback single :deadbanana2:

"Break My Soul" was the most acclaimed song of 2022 period and yet this is a disaster on the ears to the same critics :skull: This song unironically once again shows how useless and agenda driven critics are honestly

I was a BMS hater on it's release, but at its worst it's a bit generic and uninspired considering the genre it draws from and how much better other similar simples (Summer Renaissance) do. It ain't no where near as bad as WW.

Damn

I mean, music critics love to jumb on a bandwagon and I could have felt bad for Katy if it wasn't for the fact that the song is produced by a rapist. It deserves every lashing and more on top too.

This comeback is disastrous, indeed. It's been terrible press all around for working with Luke and the song itself. Deserved tbh, the song is awful and basic as hell (still going on my playlist though nnn)

Katy, we wouldn't mind it if you changed it up and experimented with your music. The bland, 2010'd silly super generic pop shtick doesn't work anymore. People are tired of it. I'm sure Little Monsters are rejoicing rn. Tbh, Gaga has been bigger than Katy for a while now. Hell, Meghan Trainor right now has been bigger than Katy. She's cooked in 2024.

Oh shut the hell up with the break my soul comparisons.

You might as well say what you mean, you're shocked the press would attack a white woman for mediocrity but not ignore a black woman for excellence.

Yes that's how it used to be in the year you were more comfortable in. Times change.

She created one of the best pop songs ever - ET.

She should draw inspiration from that. And the video didnt try to be "funny", it was exactly on theme which is perfect. Literally her peak.

I'm surprised how much attention (even if negative) she's getting for someone so irrelevant.

Maybe a celebrity cobbler is all she's destined to be these days.

NOT a discussion here comparing BMS and WW:deadbanana:

When you compare the two, BMS is a literal masterpiece. A fun cute dance song vs the lowest level possible of pop music

who the hell made a banner calling it the song of the summer :deadbanana4:

have you not listened to Joyride? or Birds of a Feather? or like... Image by Magdalena Bay? or Good Luck, Babe? or Lift You Up by Jessie & Romy? or Apple by Charli? or, hell, even the phenomenal Hate Being Alone by Dagny? I'm sorry but even though I think some people are doing too much on this song on a purely musical level, it's not good and it's produced by a r*pist. don't see how it could ever qualify as a song of the summer contender

The banner directs to Cher's far superior song.
