futuresuperstar2023 Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Janet jackson is really under-certified and it's time. Janet legacy really doesn't get justice smh 4
byzantium Posted July 10 Posted July 10 By raw numbers, Taylor Swift is probably one of the most under certified artists. I think it might be ~40 million off for her.
Feanor Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Taylor Swift, 100%. Not only are her certifications incredibly outdated, she has also not certified anything in the US since 2022. Last year alone she has sold over 120M in song units, none of which is reflected in her certifications. And in terms of total album units, she has passed the 100M mark, yet her RIAA certifications only add up to 51M. 1

Virgos Groove Posted July 10 Posted July 10 The last time Janet certified RN1814, Ariana Grande hadn't been born yet. 7
SinnerCity Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Janet Jackson Britney (There are still projects under certified) I reckon Gaga to a certain extend as well although she's been very consistent with her certifications.
Soda Pop Queen Posted July 10 Posted July 10 We always do these 'artists who are under certified" threads, how about artists who may be OVER-certified let's start there. 2

It makes no sense for Halo and Single ladies to be 9x platinum. 2

I feel like a lot of popular artists, both past and present, are... particularly in the US market. The fact that the record labels/artists pays the RIAA for certifications tells me all I need to know. Edited July 10 by Soda Pop Queen

Glitter. It's certified platinum but hasn't even reached 700k pure sales. Also, possibly unpopular opinion, all artists in the digital era. When the industry transitioned from physical to digital singles, they should've been weighted differently since they have different costs. 1 physical single = 2 digital singles could be a good formula. It's way too easy to reach diamond status nowadays. 2 2
Aspookykid Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Adele. Her pre 30 certifications haven't been updated since 2017 when she left her old label. She has like 4 singles that are diamond eligible 1
greeneyedsoul Posted July 10 Posted July 10 The easier question would be what artist has their discography [almost] totally updated in certifications.

Think you're confusing it with streaming True, but you can still reach 4xP on digital alone (WFL did it in just a few months, and went 7xP in 2013). For comparison, songs like One Sweet Day, TTWLG, Beat It, The Sign and NC2U "only" went platinum or 2xP in a similar span. With the exception of CITW97 and a few other anomalies, most singles could only dream of going 5xP. IWALY, a mega smash, "only" made it to 4xP by early-93. Of course, the singles market was bigger in the digital age, but that's because they were cheaper than physical singles, which is precisely my point. 4xP on digital isn't the same as 4xP on physical singles. 1
supertiffany Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Adele 21 is Double/2x Diamond in a year or two RITD, SLY, SFTTR, Hello are Diamond singles

robbyds Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Janet for sure control should be 7x plat minimum, possibly 8x plat RN should be 9x plat minimum, diamond most likely janet should be 9x plat minimum, diamond most likely DOAD should be 4x platinum minimum, could be 5x platinum depending on how much it sold in other music clubs TVR should be 4x platinum minimum, inching to 5x plat AFY should be 3x platinum, inching to 4x plat Discipline should be gold Number Ones should be gold minimum, closer to platinum by now I think (double album) Unbreakable could be gold by now with streaming?
