SoldierofLove Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Conservative candidate Don Stewart has won the longtime federal Liberal stronghold of Toronto-St. Paul's, a stunning result that raises questions about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's future. Stewart's victory is shocking because the seat has been held by the Liberals for more than 30 years — even through the party's past low points, such as the 2011 federal election that returned just 34 Liberal MPs to Parliament. Before Monday's vote, a Conservative candidate hadn't been competitive in Toronto-St. Paul's since the 1980s. The party hadn't won a seat in urban Toronto since the 2011 federal election. I foresee the Cons taking it the next federal election. It seems to be the trend worldwide now. But if you look at the vote split, it's still a fairly left leaning riding. The Liberals and NDP existing together will be their downfall. 1
SapphireSky Posted June 25 Posted June 25 This is happening everywhere. The next 10 years are going to be a ******* mess 1

The U.S. is also a mixed bag for what it is worth. We are in a global reorganization of the political status quo, parties that offer a new vision tend to do better. Edited June 25 by byzantium 1
Sombre Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Yeah, not surprising considering the cost of living has skyrocketed there. It's inevitable worldwide due to inflation but it's especially bad in Canada due to additional factors like huge immigration programs (which is not a bad thing!) with poor planning for housing and infrastructure.
Smarticle Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Trudeau f***d up coming into re-election year. But I don't see Conservatives making it any better
Anthinos Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Well, the Conservatives in Canada seem to be more center-right, like the German Conservatives. So not extreme, like the Republicans or some European parties, and in Canada the Liberals have a bit more competition from the NDP. It doesn't give me a stomach ache, but yes, the world does seem to be drifting to the right at the moment. But I'm not surprised. The progressive forces have ideas but no complete and clear vision, at least not here in Europe. I hope this shift to the right will strengthen the progressive forces again in the long term. We need charismatic progressive leaders again. I want to live in a future that is peaceful and green, where everything is not just about growth and money, but also about humanity, family, life, etc. 2 1
Gwendolyn Posted June 25 Posted June 25 (edited) I am not surprised, I have Canadian relatives and the number of people angry about the recent huge wave of immigration from South Asia especially during the housing crisis is huge. But the racism is sickening, I've read South Asian people who were born and lived in Canada their whole lives getting full-on racism in the past year compared to their lifetime. VOSS Posted June 25 Posted June 25 The liberals are utterly incompetent and this is not a shocking result. Unfortunately, I don't think the alternatives are any better at all. The conservatives, I think, will be just as focused on maintaining property values at the expense of Canadian workers.
DuffStan Posted June 25 Posted June 25 I've been hearing so much about the housing crisis. When I went there this year, prices were tragic.

Except the blame is not Immigration from South Asian nations. The housing crisis is due to commercial corporations hoarding all the available housing units to charge astronomical rents. Even investors who purchase properties to rent out at unreasonable rates are to blame too. I had a colleague who owned SEVEN condo units. Was charging way too much for them, and still had the audacity to blame immigration for the lack of housing without recognizing he was part of the issue to. Unfortunately Conservatives in Canada lack critical thinking skills, and it's easy to scape goat 'Immigration' when there are other much more pressing matters which is contributing to the housing crisis.
Domination Posted June 25 Posted June 25 The immigration situation is a mess. A country of like 31M people is on track to bring in like 1M people this year, most of whom are pursuing higher education and will be forced to live in poverty due to insane costs of living. It corporatism at its finest and the current Canadian gov't needs to be held accountable.
family.guy123 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 The Liberals have destroyed the country. Bring on the change

VOSS Posted July 5 Posted July 5 Quote The Liberal Party's caucus chair Brenda Shanahan told MPs late Thursday that a full caucus meeting is "impossible" this summer due to "scheduling logistics," despite a flurry of requests from parliamentarians after a shocking byelection loss in a Toronto-area riding. "Nevertheless, we will continue the conversations this summer about the changes you and Canadians want to see," Shanahan said in an email to colleagues that was obtained by CBC News. Moreover, Shanahan said, "private individual and group meetings with members of our Liberal team have already begun and will continue as we prepare for our retreat this September." On Thursday afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters that some members of the Liberal Party's Toronto caucus had met in her backyard recently to discuss the byelection results. Multiple MPs, publicly and privately, have called for a full Liberal caucus meeting after the party lost a byelection to the Conservatives in Toronto-St. Paul's, a Liberal stronghold for more than 30 years. In his first news conference since the byelection on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he's "engaging" with MPs individually, but did not commit to an in-person meeting with his entire caucus.
