I heard it as well. Soon after Please Please Please came out I was like "that sounds a bit like Olivia Newton John" and I'm not even familiar with her songs, especially her country song but had heard some somewhere not even knowing the melodies or words and yet I heard Olivia in that song as well. So when I was reading Dolly and ABBA comparisons I was like "... and Olivia" without any particular reference track. So I agree with you.

It's funny because the instant reception to this song was very negative. Then once the AutoPlayola'd first day streams and TikTok influencer checks cleared the narrative changed entirely. I remember seeing that OG tweet and the general consensus was very much along those lines. I do think the video helped shift people's opinions organically too, but there's no denying that there was at least some influence from success and targeted praise campaigns.

 

This isn't shade to Sabrina or anything either, love "Espresso" and super excited for her album. It's more that now this one vocal stan that originally went viral for an (at the time) popular opinion is now going to be the victim of everyone switching as soon as the numbers came rolling in. People can be so fickle.
