Attacks on police posts, churches and a synagogue in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan have left 20 people dead, most of them police officers. Five gunmen were also killed.

At least 46 people were taken to hospital with injuries after the Sunday evening attack.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic in southern Russia which neighbours Chechnya.

Russian media reported that around 18:00 (15:00 GMT) local time on Sunday, gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons on an Orthodox church and a synagogue in Derbent, which is home to an ancient Jewish community. Two gunmen were said to have then retreated into a nearby building, where police later said they were killed. The Kele-Numaz synagogue was severely damaged by fire.

At around the same time, in the city of Makhachkala, two gunmen ran into an Orthodox church, tried to set fire to its main icon and then opened fire, Izvestia newspaper said.

"This is a day of tragedy for Dagestan and the whole country," said Sergei Melikov, the head of the Dagestan region, who on Monday visited the synagogue and church that were attacked in Derbent.

Melikov blamed members of Islamic "sleeper cells" directed from abroad but didn't give any other details.

The affiliate of the Islamic State group in Afghanistan that claimed responsibility for a March theater massacre in Moscow quickly praised the attack in Dagestan, saying it was conducted by "brothers in the Caucasus who showed that they are still strong."

Is there any reason why?

  1. A lot of Russian army members are busy in the war against Ukraine, so they are unable to complete their usual duties in areas with high crime
  2. Tens of thousands of convicts serving time for violent crimes were sent to the war and eventually given a pardon after 6 months if they survived. Those ex-convicts are now being released back into society

Russia is storing up a crime wave when its war in Ukraine ends

Russia is now an easy target for such action. Government and army are busy on the war, they even put the blame for the Moscow Attack on ukraine when isis literally took responsobility
