Sounds nothing like either songs discussed here…

This sounds nothing like Despechá :priceless:

That's not point, my point is Rosalía stans are claiming Karol released this song just to have a Merengue song like Rosalía, and that's not the case. Merengue has been a thing this whole decade with Becky G, Manuel Turizo, El Alfa, Omega (actual latinos) making merengue hits.

The basic Rosario stans downvoting everyone who clocks their pretentious fave is hilarious

i don't think rosi is shading her, she posts random photos/photo dumps all the time, probably just included despechá to celebrate it crossing 1b, and the two songs don't really sound that similar other than deriving elements from the same genre

MTE. It's just a photodump, people are doing too much :bibliahh:

¿Eres malinchista?

Spaniards getting brave stealing from Latinos, then claiming some sort of originality.

I love Rosalia, but she has also profited out of latin music. She didn't invent merengue.

Rosalia is a smart person and I'm sure she doesn't think she invented merengue, considering she shouted out Omega on "Despechá" and has spent time in DR including helping uplift Tokischa who is Dominican.

This 1) could not actually be shade at all, 2) there may be some behind the scenes something we are not privy to…

And before I get dragged, I'm Peruvian on my mom's side and proud to be Latino thank u next

I like them both, I just don't think this is necessarily shade and it might not be for reasons assumed

Hispanic/Latin ATRLers, how big is Rosalia in Spain and Latin America? I used to feel like she was huge but her Spotify numbers seem significantly lower than some other artists I think are huge (Maluma, Karol) + her music (to me at least) sounds more cutting edge and alternative than mainstream. Is she a main pop girl or more alt?

Rosalia is huge in Spain and very popular in Latin America. But her music is nowhere near as commercial as Karol G's, which is much bigger in Latin America and possibly just as popular in Spain. They have different audiences. Karol G is very pop-urban, while Rosalia is "cooler" and much more artsy. So yes, Rosalia is alt, and Karol G is as popular as you can be.

And no, it's 2024, and Maluma isn't "huge" in Latin America. He does OK, but he's not even among the top 10 most popular acts. He gets good numbers because he is a trendhopper. Right now, Mexican music is hot, and that's what he's doing, which means good streaming numbers in the US and Mexico (the top 2 Spotify markets), which inflates his numbers. Rosalia has mainstream hits in Latin America (her Bad Bunny feat, Despechao, Con Altura, among a few others) and is definitely cooler than Maluma. Still, she isn't going to release Mexican music just because it's popular, and most of her catalog is considered alternative. Karol G is bigger than both of them, though.

Although tbh, Rosalia's weaker market is the US. In Latin America, she has quite a big audience. US Latinos, on the other hand, don't seem that into her compared to other big, more mainstream Latin acts. While she's popular with Anglo-alt kids, the fact she is Spanish-speaking obviously limits her. So, while she's well-respected in the industry with plenty of opportunities and is seen as a very cool and hot act, she struggles a bit in the US because the market of alt-Latin is limited. I mean, she still has a very respectable career in the US, but while I can see her easily jumping to stadiums in some of the main Latino markets for her next era, she isn't even arena-sized yet in most of the US. Karol G is a stadium act everywhere: the US, Spain, and Latin America. If I were Rosalia's management, I'd try to make her a big festival act in the US, which seems to be a good path for her.

Maybe in your rancho but the real testament of success in Latin America is being played at clubs, she's DOA there. Don't nobody requesting Saoko or Chicken Teriyaki to their DJs.

Rosalia is definitely played in clubs in Latin America, no clue what you're on about.

Despechao, Con Altura, La Noche de Anoche, and BESO were all big club hits.

Streams are worlwide babes even not spanish speaking countries. Let's not be dense

Rosalia's streams have to be around 65% from Spain alone - she is huge in Spain and they believe she is at Karol G level. Reality: she is not and won't be.

Karol G tour in one city alone (Los Angeles) earned as much as the entire Motomami tour.

Rosalia's top 5 markets in Spotify:

Mexico City

Santiago

Madrid

Bogota

Barcelona

It's pretty obvious most of her streams are coming from Latin America and Spain boo.

Also, I am from Brazil and Rosalia is definitely considerably more popular than Karol G here. Brazil is an outlier, obviously, but the market for mainstream Latino pop here is minimal, while the alt sound Rosalia does permeates more easily.

I'm Spanish and she's obviously huge here because she's a national popstar and by far THE Biggest we have (bet you don't know her "peers" like aitana, lola indigo or ana mena, they don't come close in terms of uccess or talent).

Rosalía is very big in the Hispanic scene but she generates very mixed reactions everywhere she's in because she doesn't fit the mold of a classical popstar, so her music isn't for everyone, so yeah you're right by calling her an alt pop girlie ig

Lola Indigo does come close to Rosalia in streams in Spain, though. Obviously, she is not as respected as an artist because she basically does teen pop, but yeah, number-wise, she is almost at Rosalia's level as of last year. Ana Mena isn't even in the top three Spanish pop female acts, nor is Aitana lbr. It's Rosalia, Lola Indigo, and probably Bad Gyal.
