It was before one of their live performances of the boy is mine, at the VMAs I think. They were on opposite ends of the room and never came together. Monica punched Brandy cause she was "doing too much". And they did not like each other. 

 

Brandy was very polished & meticulous about her good girl image, whereas Monica was more rough around the edges & "real". They did not vibe.

I would like to add Brandy's Mother was a huge reason for this. She looked down on Monica a lot and didn't really enjoy Brandy interacting with her. Sonja felt it ws very brand damaging for Brandy to be cool with Brandy outside of TBIM.
