PoisonedIvy Posted June 19 Posted June 19 When you discover an artist, whether they're new or established, does it take you awhile to admit you're fully invested as a fan? Whether that's a certain length of time (months, years, or same day if that applies.. etc) or a certain amount of projects (after 2 or 3 albums, give or take. Etc) My input: Spoiler For example, I love Ethel Cain's "Preacher's Daughter." In my opinion, it is the best album of 2022 without a doubt. But I can't bring myself to cite her as a "favorite" artist because I have this self imposed clause where I have to make sure the album or two I enjoy aren't flukes So it will take me about 3 full albums to determine if I'm just a fan of the album or of the artist. A good example is Years & Years — their first album is one of my favorites of the 2010s, and their sophomore album was enjoyable as well. Not as great as their debut, but still good. I was close to even considering them a "favorite group" in music, but then their third album happened and that all went out the window lol. So now I am merely a fan of those first two albums, but I don't go around claiming to love the artist. Maybe I'm just nitpicky but I wanted to ask you guys about it too
ChooseyLover Posted June 19 Posted June 19 For me to have my eyes on an artist I just need one song that caters to everything I love: an interesting melody, a compelling vocal delivery, musically something leaning towards R&B or reminiscent of the grandeur and glitz of Y2K Pop. And for me to root for an artist all I need is one album that can carry all of this consistently. Tyla and Rina have appealed to me flawlessly.

In the case of Rina, did you receive her second album as warmly as her first? I know a lot of people were turned off by Hold the Girl. It wasn't that bad for me, I enjoyed it more than most. Just curious what your experience was there!

Discovering her in 2020 with SAWAYAMA and all that great stuff pre-2020 had a huge impact on me. But I adooored Hold The Girl. It was everything I wanted from her and I can't think of a better project that could follow up the first one I think many people are realizing now they did too much criticizing it. Also great thread btw, can't wait to read everyone else's replies. Edited June 19 by ChooseyLover 1
jonapova Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I'm never fully invested. I'll listen to someone's latest album and then if I love it, I'll overplay it until I get bored. Current favourites being Hozier, Kasey, Christine and the Queens and Billie's latest albums.

All of the artists you mentioned have put out some exceptional projects recently. Christine is the only one I haven't quite gotten into yet, on first listen it wasn't that easy to digest. Which is fair, it's not meant to be. A revisit will give me a better chance to process it 1
simplywohoo Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Depends on the material Addison Rae garnered my genuine and continuing interest with I got it bad
Alldeezy Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It's rare they have to have the attractiveness first and kinda a love at first sight sorta thing Ive only been a stan of four artist In 30 years and It was just a rare moment I adored a new artist so quickly in the past 4 years. Allday & The Ready Set but as liking a new artist? idk they need something unique in them and a decent lead. If they start off with a lead I hate i'll avoid anything they drop till 5 years later. It's why it took me a long time to accept Billie.
Erreur2 La Nature Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I would say it's either instant or never happens for me. I instantly became a fan of my fave when I was a kid because everything about her was mesmerizing: her songs, her voice, her videos, her looks, her performances... There are very few artists that I "adore" and when it's the case they've basically hit me with the right song and visuals around the time they debuted. 1
Gorjesspazze9 Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Depends on how much I vibe with the first song I hear. Sometimes I'm just on Spotify finding new indie artists, and most my algorithm plays bedroom producers or self-taught artist. It makes the music feel more raw and personal, so I'm already accustomed to give smaller artists a chance to become a fan. As far as mainstream acts, it depends on the actual albums they put out. Since they have a label, songwriters and more resources I expect more and only become a stan if the quality is consistently there. All in all, probably a few weeks for me to digest most Artist discography's 2
Brooklyn Baby Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It depends but the only artist I've stanned immediately in the past years is Olivia. Thank god she didn't decline in quality with her second album 1
JoeAg Posted June 19 Posted June 19 it can take a day, it can also take a week tbh Chappell Roan took just a few hours earlier this week usually a day is the minimum for me!! 1
BGKC Posted June 19 Posted June 19 (edited) I've come to realize that the older I get the less likely I am to invest that kind of interest in newer artist. There was and will be new songs and albums that I thoroughly enjoy and add to a playlist, but I've stanned long enough to know a lot of new artists run on aesthetics that eventually leave the corners of my mind, especially in the streaming area or if there's such a delay between albums. Theres a lot of newer artists that I like/support, but legends really aren't being made like that anymore and it's clear. Like if there's no iconic music videos or riveting performances then I'm just not that intrigued. Edited June 19 by BGKC 1
BeyBronts Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Bey is the only artist I have consistently stanned throughout my life. I find it really hard to get obsessed with other artists! HOWEVER, I have recently fallen in love with Chappell Roan and that literally only took a day or so. Good Luck, Babe! had me hooked and then I went into her whole discography & researched her whole backstory, binged old youtube interviews etc. This is probably the first time in a decade I've felt this way about a new artist.
ariananext Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Takes a while for me, especially if they have a long discography. For years I've only really stanned Ariana, it was just in the past two years that I started loving other artists.
aedeus Posted June 19 Posted June 19 If I can connect with the voice, the melodies and the sound of an artist, I can become a fan very quickly. It just happened to me with Freya Ridings. Las weekend I heard the Blood Orange album for the first time, and I immediately fell in love with it. Now I'm currently looking for all of her songs which aren't featured in her albums, and also her live performances. My favorite song form her at the moment is: I hope I get to see her live someday... 1
Démodé Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It definitely depends. I needed Jessie Ware to release Spotlight so she can enter my hall of fame although I loved a lot of her previous tracks, but What's Your Pleasure (album of the millennium) cemented it for me. I loved Rina since her debut album and adored Hold the Girl. I did not enjoy Chappell's album at first but then I fell in love with Good Luck, Babe and suddenly the album clicked! So, definitely every case is unique. Another very good thread - especially in here - would be to find out how easily do you outgrow an artist, either because you don't vibe with their next projects or because they become increasingly problematic. 1
American Nightmare Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I'm a bit of a creature of habit and mostly just listen to bands and artists I'm already in love with such as The Killers, Garbage, Cage the Elephant, Evanescence, blink-182, Florence + the Machine, The Pretty Reckless, Coldplay and Michelle Branch. It also helps that they all still release music. If I do discover somebody new or at least new to me, I can fall in love with them pretty fast if the quality is there. I recently found a band called flor as their song 'slow motion' randomly played for me and it was love at first listen so I went and checked out the album it was from and loved that as well. I then saw that they had 2 other albums out so listened to those as well and also loved them, so it became clear that they were a band I was going to stick with. One of their new songs from this year is currently my #2 most played song of the year and I think it'll eventually become #1!
Virgos Groove Posted June 19 Posted June 19 It depends. I added Rina and Chloe x Halle to my sig on the strength of Rina/Sawayama and TKAA/UH, but ended up removing them because HTG and CxH's solo projects were disappointing. So, I guess you could say it "taught" me to only stan artists after they have a sizeable discography. Same thing with Lil Nas, who I've been rooting for since 2019 (even when this place was calling him a one-hit wonder). I stanned during the Montero era, but the new stuff has been a let down, so I removed him. I only started calling Tinashe one of my fav artists in early-2021, after going through her entire discography (including mixtapes). So even though I was disappointed with BB/Angel, she's still one of my favs. There are a few artists that are on my "to watch" list (PinkPantheress, Ethel, Tyla), but I'll only start calling them "favs" if they prove they can deliver on hype.
Wicked Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I think I can be a fan instantly but more so about albums (unless it's an electronic artist since that genre is more about singles, remixes and DJ mixes). I'll keep following you and checking in. Even if you drop something less than great early on I give chances. Now for me to go a little harder with it and really want to tap into who an artist is and etc,. You have to have both great projects and an interesting narrative around them. There has to be something in the music that makes you standout to a point I feel like I need to know more about who this is artistically. A unique lyrical perspective, interesting production choices, interesting songwriting overall.
Suilen Posted June 20 Posted June 20 For up-and-coming artists who have like one album out, that album being great is enough for me to like them and spread the word. I can survive a disappointing follow-up as that happens pretty often, but I need them to come through with the third one, or I'll start losing interest. Many smaller artists release tons of individual songs these days since putting an album out is hard, but the quality may greatly vary, so I try not to get attached to them until an EP or something is out. For established artists, I'd say liking about a half of their discography would put me into the fan category, but it's not an ironclad rule. Sometimes an artist may not have a particularly strong discography, but they have something else going for them that makes me want to follow/support them, be that strong singles (mostly for older artists), some discernible talent, activism etc. Or an artist may have a great discography, and that just won't be enough for me to consider myself a fan or a supporter for some external reason. But since my stanning days are long gone, me being a fan just means a slightly increased interest in an artist compared to the rest, an occasional defense of them, maybe a mention here and there for more people to notice them. Unless I have an actual hyperfixation on someone, the difference will barely register.
