Shay Mitchell claims to be half-Spanish when she's half-Filipino; Gets dragged

All this talk about local dishes makes you sound very Filipino …  Yeah, I love certain Filipino dishes, but I'm more on the vegetarian side, so I don't do a lot of the adobos, except as sauce on rice. I also don't do the purple egg, or the egg that hasn't hatched yet (balut)—that'll be a challenge for me! I'm only half-Filipino when it comes to that—my other half says no (laughs).

As for my mom, she eats everything. She left the Philippines when she was 19, so she speaks [a hybrid of] English and Tagalog, which she actually doesn't know anymore. All the other members of my family, as well as her sisters—all 9 of them—still speak Filipino. My mom, on the other hand, is like "white Filipino," who speaks "Tagalog-ish"—that's what I call it.

Now why is Vanessa Hudgens in this? She is a proud Filipina.

She's so weird. As untalented as she is, she really was the most compelling character of YOU. After she was killed off, the show went downhill and I couldn't even finish season 2. Let alone come back for season 3. :rip:

Nothing new. All these half Asian celebrities do nothing for the Asian community. Take Bruno Mars. Not a lick about being Asian but loves being "R&B."

Don't many Filipinos have Spanish ancestry? Maybe that's what she meant.

Whilst the Filipinos were colonised by Spain, less than 5% of Filipinos have Spanish ancestry. But yeah, it's a very common misconception even amongst Filipinos themselves where everyone assumes they have Spanish in them.

people like to say they have Spanish or even Japanese ancestry to try to make them sound more interesting and exotic

my mom does it too.

but i think that's because she's trying to mask the fact that i'm clearly mixed and don't look like my father or my brothers at all

idk if her race was exactly a big part of emily's character.

and the actor who played her dad is half korean which doesn't apply to shay.

A lot of my Filipino friends unfortunately do this. if they even have 1% spanish blood they claim to be mixed or spanish filipino...

It happens in other cultures who have also been colonized sadly

This is completely exaggerated and false. :skull:

There have been multiple studies on the genetics of Filipinos and less than 2% of the population actually has Spaniard ancestry. If you'd like to read the most recent study from 2021, you can click here. This is just a lie that many Filipinos perpetuate because of self-hate and colonialism.

And it's also historically illogical. The Philippines were colonized by Spain using local rulers (similar to how British India and Africa were colonized). That means the Europeans barely had a presence in their colonies the way they mixed (and raped) themselves into Latin America.

Yep, and many other Asians too. Freddie Mercury of Queen is one of the biggest western musicians of all time and went out of his way to cover up his South Asian roots (and the fact that he was gay). I know it was a different time in the 1960s-80s, but it's just sad.

why is it every person who claims to be Spanish says they're "spicy"? Hilarious Baldwin did this too. Spaniards are white europeans :deadbanana:

How do y'all know which one is the lie? Are you just assuming based on which quote came first?

Based off of my 40 seconds of research, both her maternal grandparents were born in Spain with the last names Garcia and Lopez.

Lol I've seen this before too. I think with Spanish colonization, people have gotten confused what actual Spanish people are :skull:
