Gwendolyn Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Macron dissolves national assembly, calls snap elections Emmanuel Macron, the French president, has announced that he is dissolving the national assembly, and calling for legislative elections on June 30 and July 7. The French president said that he can't pretend nothing has happened, that the outcome of the EU election is not good for his government and that the rise of nationalists is a danger for France and Europe. In elections to the European Parliament, Marine le Pen's National Rally party won about 32% of the vote - a 10 point increase on the last EU election in 2019. It is also more than double the 15% taken by Mr Macron's Renaissance party, according to exit polls. https://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2024/jun/09/eu-europe-elections-2024-results-news-updates-live-latest
GhostBox Posted June 9 Posted June 9 There's been so many elections this year and now another one 💀 1 1
beautiful player Posted June 9 Posted June 9 interesting. hopefully the left will have a strong and unifying message to persuade voters. 4 2
roso Posted June 9 Posted June 9 This could backfire bad, there's a risk for cohabitation. The far right doing 32% is so ******* scary 5
Bocanada Posted June 9 Posted June 9 (edited) 8 minutes ago, Zaram said: Why would he do that? Le Pen will just sweep the election He does not have a choice, he has to listen to the citizens, it's written in the Constitution. Le Pen as Prime Minister can weaken her own party, if people see that she's following Macron's policy (even though she's supposed to be against it, but we all know that's bullshit).Left can be a good surprise, but not all parties will agree to unite. Far right is dominating in Europe mostly, even in Germany and Austria It's gonna be a disaster here until 2027. Edited June 9 by Bocanada 3
Hephaestus Posted June 9 Posted June 9 I mean, if he's trying to make Le Pen win so people can see she's not a better fit than him (or anyone else) to guide the country, that's actually quite smart
DuffStan Posted June 9 Posted June 9 He's part of the problem. I hate what's going on in France and Europe right now. No leader is inspiring enough for the youth to get out there and feel like their vote could do something!!! 7 1
glitch Posted June 9 Posted June 9 I'm so sick of these far-right loonies and the brain dead sheep that vote for them. Marine Le Pen you will start to cough in 3 days 4 9
Archetype Posted June 9 Posted June 9 What is the driving reason behind the shift to the right? Immigration? Or are there other major reasons? Seems odd for this to be a larger EU trend to be a one-off issue. 2

LIT Posted June 9 Posted June 9 Wait, dissolving the national assembly? Is that a normal thing in Europe or…?
Bloodflowers. Posted June 9 Posted June 9 If Marine Le Pen becomes prime minister, she will lose by the next elections after people see her party is weak at running a country

Not common, but possible if seen as appropriate under the circumstances. Quote Early dissolutions may be possible in parliamentary and semi-presidential systems, to resolve conflicts between the executive and the legislature; either a "snap election" called by an executive seeking to increase its legislative support, or an election triggered by parliament withholding confidence and supply from the government. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissolution_of_parliament 1

Seems odd for this to be a larger EU trend to be a one-off issue. Economic inequality is really the main reason. I think a lot of communities have never really recovered since the 2008 financial crash. It's been growing ever since but Covid and lockdown really kicked it into overdrive. People want change and the far right is speaking their language. I also don't think it helps that most people alive today don't remember the second world war and thus have no real concept of what fascism in Europe looked like. If people could remember being bombed every night and their neighbours being dragged out into the streets then maybe they'd think twice about voting for these people. 8
shoganai Posted June 9 Posted June 9 I think Europe is sadly going to change drastically in the next decades. Far-right raises is a sign they cannot comprehend in Bruxelles
