Ever since the Republicans torpedoed their own immigration/border bill the Dems have finally started not being afraid of this issue.

for too long the Dems have just let the republicans say and do whatever they want on this issue and make the public think democrats don't care about the border. All while they sat in the corner not saying a word.  Finally that's changing

"not being afraid of the issue" is completely adopting their policies and letting Republicans ratchet the discourse further to the right. Make it make sense :juanny:

Some of these responses lmao :bibliahh:

I swear Biden could throw a baby off a cliff or use the hard n word and the handful of dickriders he has on ATRL would find a way to justify it :deadbanana4:

He's actually on video doing just that. Granted he was in court reading a testimony if I remember correctly but you could tell he had no issue or hesitation using the word. Which isn't surprising giving his racist history.

Go Trump,!!! :jonny6:

All his presidency Biden and his White House press secretary have said the border is secure. Yet he had to resign this bill, which is similar to what Trump had, to secure the border (his words, not mine). Biden is a liar and not much different from Trump

@GhostBox what's the problem ?

Makes sense. Unfortunately the media has taken hold of the Republican narrative and has spread it so far that the average American has fallen for the propaganda. The White House has no choice but to give, at least, the appearance of doing something in order to appease the average American.

And the Left has helped push these anti-immigrant narratives all in an attempt to hurt Biden. If they instead helped combat misinformation, we would not be dealing with this. But this is the kind of stuff the left wants. They want minorities to hurt just so Biden can lose.

I'm not even sure what you're trying or hoping to say here. Are you suggesting one of the busiest borders in the world is.... unregulated?

The problems our immigration system faces today is that its regulations are archaic and largely prioritized around terrorizing the undocumented.

Which is what the bill Democrats offered the GOP essentially does.

I'm confused how anyone who is not a Republican can say they found the immigration bill impressive.

It wasn't even an immigration bill where Democrats got anything they wanted wrt to immigration. It was a bribe to the GOP to get money to Ukraine.

I just think your post encapsulates someone who is unfortunately highly partisan and wants to feel like they understand what's happening in politics but seems themselves actually terribly unsure on the actual details of the policy being pushed by the party they support. The immigration bill is objective awful for both the undocumented and the border:

You cannot "shut down" the border. The US-Mexico border is one of the busiest avenues of commerce in the world.

"Shutting down the border" would simply just mean slashing down however many people are allowed to be legally processed at the border a day and this number would not go back until normal until "illegal apprehensions fell" to a specific number that... they have never been. Illegal apprehensions would literally boom - like they did under Title 42 - because that's the aim of this very policy. To further erase the very few legal avenues people have to migrate to America, like via asylum.

The same party that cried about "Trump putting kids in cages" lose any and all moral standing when pushing a bill that would allow ICE to deport ANY migrant in a little as 12 hours if they were unable then-and-there in ICE custody to prove evidence of their papers.

It's not even a political win because polling consistently shows that, while Americans respond positively to questions like "Do you support America having a strong and secure border?", most Americans when polled can't actually stomach what that policy looks like in practice whether under Trump or Biden (family-child separations, kids in cages, migrants being left to drown in a river because Texas officials wouldn't let them come on land)

It's made worse that your anti-migrant racism doesn't even do anything for Bid en electorally given that the actual policy prospects of what Dems under Biden are proposing would literally not solve any actual issues at the border. Effectively outlawing asylum is not going to make border crossings go down- it will just continue to boom 'apprehensions' like it did under Title 42 (a Trump policy Biden continued). Allowing ICE to deport people in just 6 hours without ever seeing an immigration court isn't going to solve any alleged "crisis" at the border. You're effectively dismantling any argument to vote for Biden by now showing that his 2020 won has objectively moved Dems to the right.

Dismantling the rights of migrants by 30+ years while not actually solving any problems in America's antiquated immigration system all at the expense of migrants' humanity is NOT an appealing proposal for 99% of the actual Dem base. if you want to sound like a caricature of a Texan sheriff who reeks of chewing tobacco (which is how anyone who calls people "illegals" comes off to the ACTUAL Dem base), do you, but you're only highlighting that you're not and never have been part of the actual base who wins Dems elections.

Again, [the claim there's a crisis at the border] is objectively just not true.

You have a shortage of processing staff in proportion to the current legal framework to enter the country legally.

You have an increase of "apprehensions" at the border - still below that of the early 2000s - because Title 42 (aka shutting down the border to asylum seekers and most migrants) just created a bottle neck situation.

Most people don't even know that the number of apprehensions is not unique people but includes the same individuals being apprehending over and over.

On 2/15/2024 at 9:24 AM, Communion said:

You cannot "close the border" between Mexico and the US. It is one of the busiest intersections of commerce in the world. There has never been and will never be a time where "illegal crossings" are at 0. That's not how that works. To think so is to approach the legal issue of migration with an imaginary understanding of it as law.

The bill literally gives customs and border patrol the new ability to deport any undocumented person that comes into their possession (and anyone who cannot then and there provide legal documentation for their status to be in America) in as little as 5-6 hours without any due process in front of either an immigration court or judge.

On 5/7/2023 at 6:48 PM, Communion said:

The point is your [claims there's a crisis at the border] buys into multiple right-wing narratives that largely end up untrue.

Things like the purposeful conflating of apprehensions vs actual individuals who have crossed the border. Or framing things as a "crisis at the border". Of course there's going to be countless of people waiting to be processed through the border - the US essentially turned off asylum for 3 years.

Title 42 was not only a failure because of its brazen illegality, but because it multiplyed the number of *encounters* that happened, with many people being captured, placed back over the Mexico-US border into Mexico, and them simply returning again, because asylum seekers *inherently have no place to return to*.

In 2022, when you heard people talk about "2 Million Border Encounters", that not only included people who crossed back and forth multiple times after being caught, but over 100k+ people who *entered legally*:

I've tried to explain more in the past here:

And recommend reading analysis by legal experts like Aaron who actually have a dog in this fight and are doing important work to push fact in the face of mass hysteria and far-right anti-immigrant propaganda.

Border crossings were down during the pandemic and the US government has not, at all, allowed people "to stay without legal consequence", with Biden continuing much of Trump's harshest policies like Stay in Mexico, Title 42 that basically made asylum illegal, keeping undocumented children in disgusting "processing centers", and added restrictions on what refugees, from countries not impacted by Title 42, could or could not do to be allowed at ports of entry.

On 10/16/2022 at 4:05 PM, Communion said:

....yes, which is what signifies the border is closed. What do you think a closed border would mean? America is not some tiny island in the middle of nowhere. The Mexican-US border is a main point of commerce.

It seems like you're operating on definitions that don't match the reality within America.

1) Encounters =/= apprehensions. Encounters include apprehensions but also include things like Ukrainian refugees flown into San Diego airport that, for some reason, get special exemption from Title 42.

From the own link you provided on "encounters":

2019: 1,148,024
2020: 683,178
2021: 1,956,519
2022: 2,493,721

This numbers don't represent individuals - they represent instances. So now tell me what you think is going to happen when someone who'd be initially processed *once* because asylum at a port of entry was previously legal now has to cross 5+ times to try and apply because most asylum has been criminalized?

Countless border encounters are largely the same people crossing over, being stopped and sent back, crossing over again, etc. This is a product of Biden leaving in place the racist Title 42 policy that Trump implemented under COVID to make asylum de-facto illegal.

2) You quote this:

Do you understand why expulsions would fall by percentage when Title 42 is slowly being dismantled by immigration lawyers in courts and slowly rolling back the unethical criminalization of asylum?

Of course expulsions are going to fall when less and less types of crossings are considered illegal - because we are slowly ending the reality that Trump and centrist Democrats left us in trying to make asylum de-facto illegal.

You trying to double-down and defend GOP talking points on immigration shows the failure of Democrats' liberalism because the reality is the entire sense of the border being overwhelmed is artificial and self-imposed, while their failure to actually promote progressive economic messaging that holds corporations accountable leaves wide open space for Republicans to fuel xenophobia and faux-populist nativism.

I mean, the only way centrist Dems know how to talk about more jobs is through racist fear-mongering.

:skull:

Liberal states like New Jersey, Maryland, California and Nevada house greater %'s of undocumented people than the states involved in this whole situation. Why isn't Phil Murphy or Larry Hogan shipping people southward?

Also, the nonsense fearmongering you're doing over the border is unfounded, racist nonsense.

There are literally fewer people crossing the southern border now than there were in the 1990s.

A third of all crossings are repeat encounters because of Biden leaving Trump's Title 42 in place.

Political malpractice - angering your progressive base by contributing to racist discourse that migrants are subhuman AND pissing off any right-wingers who you hoped could be swayed to vote for you because you can't force other nations to take in people into their borders either.
