Gwendolyn Posted June 1 Posted June 1 On the eve of Pride month, a new poll has found declining support for LGBTQ2 rights in Canada. The Ipsos survey polled adults in 26 countries on a variety of metrics measuring support for the queer community. Canada, it found, was among the few countries where support for rights and visibility appeared to register "precipitous drops," Ipsos vice-president of public affairs Sanyam Sethi said. What really stood out to me was how starkly Canadians are changing their opinions," she said. "On some of these support aspects the drops in Canada are the highest across all 26 countries we have trend data for." One area where attitudes appeared to have shifted was support for LGBTQ2 visibility. While 49 per cent of respondents agreed with people being open about their sexual orientation or gender identity, that still put Canada in the bottom 10 of countries measured. What's more, the number was down by 12 per cent from 2021. Similarly, the poll found support for LGBTQ2 people showing affection in public (kissing or holding hands) at 40 per cent, down eight points from 2021. Just one-third of respondents supported more LGBTQ2 characters on screen, down 10 per cent from 2021. https://globalnews.ca/news/10538379/canada-lgbtq2-rights-poll/
Gwendolyn Posted June 1 Author Posted June 1 The full poll is here but I want to warn you that it may be upsetting for some people, numbers are down across the board and the trans section is the lowest, almost completely red : https://www.ipsos.com/sites/default/files/ct/news/documents/2024-05/Pride-Report-2024.pdf
Aston Martin Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Stuff like this is why I always encourage queer people to carry whatever means of self defense are legal where you live with you in public at all times. You never know when you'll need them. 1
Trent W Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Same as Netherlands, Canada was one of the most open countries It really is interesting to see what is really swinging back the pendulum I don't think characters like Elon or Andrew tate have this level of influence 1

They are so far ahead and the numbers really show in the graphs. 3
CottageHore Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Honestly, I feel like what we're witnessing is all the pandering bullshit systems and marketing fading. All the virtue signaling and performative politics that were pro-LGBTQ+ had a large majority feigning support because less people felt they were "allowed" to express their openly anti-queer beliefs. But now that we have politicians like Trump, more space has returned for homophobic people to confidently express their anti-queer ideals and so we're just seeing the honest truth again. When people are given the platform to express their bigotry, they take it and we're seeing more of that. Canada and the USA are ******, truly.

They get triggered by the freedom of queer people. They wanna control the world but they are losing it But anyway, that Ipsos report shows 17% of Gen Z being queer, so people are coming out more and more 1

Communion Posted June 1 Posted June 1 (edited) I get the desire to want to be able to gauge attitudes and worldwide polls like this can be helpful as another data point, but sometimes it can feel like poll-shopping to find a result that fits a specific outcome, especially when it then gets into crosstabs and deeper data where results end up reading oddly. Like am I actually meant to believe support for LGB people on sports teams (the question explicitly does not reference trans people) in the US dropped *10 points* in 2 years? One is meant to believe Gen Z men are more homophobic than those born in the 1940s, as some of the worldwide age breakdowns would lead one to believe? Sure, it will include Gen Z men from more conservative countries, but also then graphs like this comparing worldwide generations to one another are hard to make sense of: Of course wonky specifics don't invalidate polls and it's clear there's a general worldwide sense of homophobia and transphobia, but one should reserve judgements on what then solutions to find. It's not hard to imagine more reactionary liberals, moderates, and conservatives using this debate to throw trans and nb people under the bus, but seemingly, it's not older people in many of the trans-related questions leading the negative results or drop in support out of some confusion or fear for changing language, but young men lashing out at trans people in some self-created culture war. I'm not sure what the age mixture of ATRL is, but even with my late-millennial point of view, things are significantly better for lgbtqia+ people now than 20 years ago. We should be grateful, and not take our rights for granted. 1
State of Grace. Posted June 1 Posted June 1 (edited) There's obviously been a lot of homophobia and especially transphobia over the last couple of years, but I'm still not buying the "Gen Z are gonna be even more conservative!!!" narrative that I keep seeing everywhere. To me it is honestly expected? Any sort of impactful progress we make as a community will inevitably be met with rigid resistance and pushback. We still have a loooooong way to go, but there's always backlash before acceptance. If anything this is a sign that times have changed. You will not convince me that things were better for us in 2010. I think what's depressing to me is the way many people throw the most vulnerable group in our community under the bus when in reality conservatives would still hate us regardless of them existing. GhostBox Posted June 1 Posted June 1 All the anti trans stuff that's been happening the past 5 years really has affected peoples views of all gay people sadly. It will only continue 2
Princess Aurora Posted June 1 Posted June 1 I'm so shocked by Italy ranking so high That explains that the problem is the government and not the people where I live. Interesting
Redstreak Posted June 1 Posted June 1 Well I've been wearing my pride hat while out and about today so I'm trying to do my part I guess I actually got a compliment from a lady at Dunkin's

Dera Posted June 2 Posted June 2 2 hours ago, State of Grace. said: You will not convince me that things were better for us in 2010. Who's "us"? At least in the United States, there's significantly more anti-trans legislature than there was 14 years ago. In republican states, trans life is now explicitly criminalized (public bathroom use, employment, access to medical treatment) where it was not before. Trans people are a right-wing bogeyman now. Tell me if your perspective is different, but I think trans people flew under the radar more in 2010. I was younger too, but I felt a lot more optimism in 2015 (the "transgender tipping point" with Laverne Cox on the cover of Time) than I do now. I appreciate the gratitude/optimism (?), but it's not safe to assume things linearly get better with time. The 1920s in Germany were better for trans people than the 1930s.
Nintendoes Posted June 2 Posted June 2 The right wing and the muslims are joining force to hate on LGBTQIA+. It's so funny since the left wing brought all of em muslims in the first place. Source: https://civilek.info/en/2023/07/13/muslims-and-christians-fight-together-against-the-lmbtq-ideology/
