Just in time for your sordid May-September love affair, here's a new neo-Julee Cruise ballad from Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence, "Shades of Cool." Close your eyes and stop imagining girl belting it out at the Kimye wedding, but rather in the kind of gloomy, David Lynch-ian Americana of a dark saloon in a mostly-forgotten town somewhere off an interstate highway, and we guarantee chills – Lana sings about a guy who drives a Chevy Malibu and loves his drugs calling for her, seemingly across a vast plain illuminated only by fading headlights… Basically, we can't wait for the ten-minute art-film video.

Unlike its '80-inspired predecessor "West Coast", "Shades of Cool" is a slow and slightly gloomy ballad marked by reverberated guitars, slight atmospherics, and Del Rey's vocals that alternate between a hushed whisper and ephemeral wailing. It definitely harks back to 2012's Born To Die, but there's also a bit more grace and sophistication going on.

Lana Del Rey's new song is a beautiful, brooding return to form. [ ] There's a magic to the track, from its opening chords (which would fit perfectly in a James Bond theme song) to its concluding crescendo.

"Shades of Cool" – a waltz featuring a searing Auerbach guitar solo, swollen strings and Del Rey's operatic soprano – would be perfect for a James Bond film directed by Quentin Tarantino.

The reality is that her contralto voice is now quite competent in a live setting, and on Ultraviolence, Del Rey's vocal delivery shows increased maturity and assuredness. The haunting chorus of "Shades of Cool" and the reverb-drenched harmonies of atmospheric bonus track "Guns and Roses" unexpectedly recall the gorgeously ethereal vocals of Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser. Del Rey has never sounded better.

As with "West Coast," "Shades Of Cool" is a massively impressive production that retains Lana's essence while delving into deeper, more experimental sonic territory. Together, the two tracks already suggest that Ultraviolence will be best served as a start-to-finish experience, as opposed to a set of radio-friendly singles. (If it wasn't clear enough already, it should be by now: Lana might be popular, but she's not a trying to be a radio-friendly pop star — this is not a complaint.)

I overplayed it and don't really use it anymore. ****** My Way Up To The Top still invades my mind though.

ARGH

What's happening to you Lana? Why are you make such awful songs now?!!!!!

The verses ARE AWFUL. The off key notes in places. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/bananas/deadbanana2_zpsd45da7d4.gif

Really, I don't like it. Her vocal sounds a mess. Nasally mess. The production is too over powering.

I'm sad.

Her songs used to have gorgeous melodies (even Black Beauty has an amazing melody, Glad that's on the album) but now it's a mess.

I thought I will never see the day my love for her wilted away but it's happening.

All the UV 2014 meltdowns will always send me :deadbanana2:

This song used to have a big significance in my life back when my biggest priority was to have regular sex with complicated men.
Men who i never got to understand, but for some reason they would call me to meet up, and they were kind, and they were focused on getting as much pleasure out of my mouth as they could.

So it takes me back to those days.

And writing this and thinking back on those days when i was young and beautiful makes me smile.
Back in those days i used to totally like be completely sexually satisfied. Because I was that b*tch and everybody knew it, and they wanted me in their bed.
Tapping into this part of my brain brings back so many thoughts, and sometimes i think, i'll never be able to go back to that point of sexual obsession that brought on constant euphoria throughout my daily life.

But i sit in my shower, listening to Ultraviolence as i feel an ache between my thighs, and i realize that the magic is still here.

I was so thrown off by the UV era at first because I expected more Paradise, but this song quickly grew on me. I remember driving around the freeway that summer with the boy I liked since high school, drinking beers as we stopped on the side of the road blasting Lana… memories :jonnycat:

Anyway, it's a masterpiece. "When he calls, he calls for me… and not for you…" the haunting vocals and her voice trails off from that line… gorgeous!

I remember seeing that user here a few years ago...I don't think he ever truly moved on after this album and just become a OLDRH :deadbanana2:

Still in the upper half of my top 10 Lana Del Rey songs of all time. :alexz:

"West Coast" and "Shades of Cool" really improved my view of her artistry.

NOW:

Based on the songs we've heard so far, this album is going to be excellent and will really showcase her growth since Born to Die.

We saw her vision and had to defend it against the chart-obsessed haters in SYG.

Did you used to have a Colton Haynes avatar back then? I remember that as being you for some reason but I might be wrong
