ChristerD Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Not a moment too soon, but I'm very happy we got there eventually. 2
Pendulum Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Good for them. We love Norway now, if only they could treat their minorities like the Sámi right.. 1
Both Sides Now Posted May 22 Posted May 22 Ireland and Spain also recognise the State of Palestine. I wonder what happened to Slovenia also recognising? Israel fuming. Please keep them! 9 1
Bumba Posted May 22 Posted May 22 I hate how it's only happening now. Better late than never, but should we really be congratulating them for doing the bare minumum after this apartheid state has been ruling for decades? I hope all other European countries follow though 1
welham Posted May 22 Posted May 22 In response to the recognition: 1) Israeli defense minister Gallant (yes, the same one that might face arrest warrants by the ICC) canceled the disengagement law in northern West Bank, setting the stage to further three colonies to return in the areas surrounding Jenin. Jenin is a significant Palestinian city in which Israeli forces have been conducting military "operations" for the last two days or so, killing many incl' civilians. Settler colonialism continues. 2) Finance minister and rabid settler extremist Smotrich is now demanding to indefinitely withold tax revenue funds from the Palestinian Authority, which governs major Palestinian areas in the West Bank, among other measures. This is on top of measures already adopted and enforced by the Israeli state to strangle the PA and Palestinian population in general. The recognition is an important move, but don't let it distract you from the settler colonial push that the Israeli government is responding with. 7
Both Sides Now Posted May 22 Posted May 22 If Belgium and France recognise, then more than half of the top 10 contributors to the EU will recognise Palestine (Poland, Sweden, Ireland, Spain, Belgium and France). The current governments of Italy and Netherlands precludes them while Germany and Austria will be the last bastions of apartheid support in the EU. Hopefully that hag Ursula will be ousted as Commissioner too. 5

We can work on shaming countries that were to late when there is not an ongoing genocide. But right now we should be directing vitriol towards countries who are holding back progress (like the United States) 1

Domination Posted May 22 Posted May 22 I think it's a nice gesture but also so empty after all this time. I think we will continue to see more countries do it (including US at some point) as Israel increasingly becomes a liability.
