What a mature album, both sonically and thematically. I think this is her best?

Very impressed and content. :jonny6:

Partial debuts really have proven to not have any effect so

Posted

Now I know why I'm so obsessed with Birds of a Feather, it's so Carly Rae coded, at least in the melodies

This is one of the best musical moments in any song this year... - Base - ATRL

so she can still flop in streaming? Not that it matters with this level of acclaim anyways.

Uh the album is a snoozefest...she's not my cup of tea but she gets that many awards im sorry but when the weeknd and drake says its all about politics abd schmoozing better believe em how folklore was nominated but not after hours when it could have won album record and song if the year .. how it did not make the noms  im glad folklore won but the weeknd deserved record of the year for blinding lights..

To answer your completely off topic statement, Weeknd got shut out by the Academy bc he chose Super Bowl over Grammys. Never was about Taylor or Billie. Now go listen to the album again without your bias and let us know what you think🙏💙

Her music usually puts me to sleep and I can never get into it but I listened to this album on the way to work and it's really good! Lunch, The Diner, Blue, Bittersuite and Birds of A Feather are my favorites.

Can anybody tell me what a Billie show is like? I bought tix to see her for the first time and my mind is racing with the thought of hearing this GODLY album live

Incredibly mid... it'll be praised uncontrollably because of how critics reward anything slightly better than average

Im on CHIRIRO and this album is a classic already, CHIRIRO is making my brain tingle its crazy

Ok!! Have some semi-coherent thoughts after 3 listens! Have some...controversial takes based on what I've read so far from y'all.

Billie continues to be an excellent artist and the album is very good! The album was definitely different than what I was expecting and I think I was somewhat "set up for failure" in two different ways. The first being, some who listened to the album earlier than me likening it to a cultural reset along the lines of Born To Die, Melodrama, NFR, Folklore, etc... The second being, my fiancé played the first listen on shuffle and I was not aware until I listened to it by myself (WTF. is he psychotic???).

My synopsis view is that it's a great album despite Finneas' best efforts at ruining it from time to time. I think the album is at its greatest when the production lets Billie shine through and gets a little muddled and overproduced when Finneas tries a little too hard. I think the track number is somewhat misleading as the average track run time is 4:40. I know people were celebrating it being a short, concise album. I kind of beg to differ here and say it didn't feel particularly concise at least when compared to albums such as Eternal Sunshine or Melodrama.

My track ranking and some related comments... please don't flay me too hard! :chick1:

Tier 1 - put them in the louvre :wanda:

1. Wildflower - What a gorgeous song! Truly incredible. Love the scaled back production elements with Billie's vocals clearly the star of the show. A most gorgeous song.

2. Birds of a Feather - Very catchy, and in my opinion, should have been the lead single. Really love the instrumental, the melody throughout especially in the chorus. She's fabulous!!

3. L'amour - really interesting song. I think probably the best balance between the best of Finneas and the best of Billie on the album. Very fun! I could appreciate the production elements here and felt the song benefited from its long track length

4. Blue - another slay! understated, beautiful!!

Tier 2 - a good meal :clap3:

5. Lunch - she's a bop. I think it gets a bit over-produced at the end. The DJ-dubstep like vibes at the end aren't for me (sounds a bit too much like a remix that would play to the song at a club) although I enjoyed the gaspy-elements. Probably wouldn't be my choice for the lead single, maybe a 2nd single? I think the first single should be both catchy and more similar to the overall soundscape of the album and I would have gone for Birds of a Feather.

6. Skinny - so beautifully melancholic! I think there's times where the Lana Del Rey cosplay is a bit too strong. The orchestral bit was a bit too heavy-handed for me, but I enjoyed the outro into Lunch.

7. The Greatest - this song is ultimately great, but based on what y'all said, I really expected more. I think this song could grow on me though once I get over the very, very high expectations I had for it. It does give my HTE vibes, but I definitely prefer HTE.

Tier 3 - I need more time with them/I just don't like them :suburban:

8. Bittersuite - I liked the first half of the song. The second half of the song goes back to a very similar beat/instrumental from Diner, which I dislike. I really enjoy the outro to Blue, it's excellent. I'll listen to this one again and it could grow on me.

9. Diner - the instrumental to this song is giving random music you play through the record player in your animal crossing house. I was happy this was one of the shorter songs. Probably won't come back to this.

10. Chihiro - ok, definitely my most controversial take... :gaycat5: Really enjoy the first 1.5 minutes, but then Finneas just destroyed this song. Felt like this song had no business being 5 minutes long and honestly begged for it to end while drowning in the upsidedown with the Stranger Things soundscape. Billie has such beautiful vocals in this and I think Finneas really took the production too far here. Would love a scaled back version of this.

Overall: somewhere between around an 8.2/10 for me? I did really enjoy most of the project! The weight of expectations was heavy. I don't think it's quite a "cultural reset," but it is very excellent for large swaths of it. For a 10 track album though, I did think there was a tad bit too much I would personally cut.
