For the first time ever, the Eurovision Song Contest has disqualified a country eligible to participate right in the middle of the day the Grand Final takes place.

The statement from the European Broadcasting Union:

Quote

The Dutch artist Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night's Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest.

We would like to make it clear that, contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any other performer or delegation member.

We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all staff at the Contest. In light of this, Joost Klein's behaviour towards a team member is deemed in breach of Contest rules.

The Grand Final of the 68th Eurovision Song Contest will now proceed with 25 participating songs.

This is what the Dutch broadcaster had to say about it in a press release:

It is the first time in history of the contest this happens. The disqualification has caused an uproar amongst fans and artists alike, with both parties considering the nature of disqualifying the Dutch act disproportionate.

The Eurovision Song Contest, often known simply as Eurovision or by its initialism ESC, is an international song competition organised annually by the European Broadcasting Union. Each participating country submits an original song to be performed live and transmitted to national broadcasters via the Eurovision and Euroradio networks, with competing countries then casting votes for the other countries' songs to determine a winner.

What do you think? Is this good for the reputation of the biggest song festival in the world?
