UnanimousBB16 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 At least he is being honest. He never claimed to be anything else. The politics and homophobia in the business is also why his co-star won't publicly come out. Several gay actors from the past and present have stated that their homosexuality is used against them in the business, and that their agents/teams tell them to stay closeted, or else their careers will be ruined. The gay men of the golden era went to their graves closeted (publicly), and many of the others in younger generations came out when their acting careers declined heavily. Even the more successful "out" gay actors had their big roles before they came out, and are reduced to playing gay characters (though they still lose some of those roles to straight men, and don't get the accolades). Even the openly gay actors hide their partners, and a part of that is due to the advise of their teams, for marketability purposes. 4

Their casting agents, managers, executives, and the networks care, hence why actors have an "image" that is curated by their teams, to encourage their talent's mass marketability. LGBT work is immediately banned in places like Africa and Asia, and many queer actors (closeted or not) are either refused roles, or taken off projects due to their sexuality. If the business didn't care, stuff like this wouldn't happen. Queer actors are already limited, and it's due to their "lack of marketability" in the industry's eyes, hence encouraging them to hide their sexuality. Race, sexuality, gender, etc SHOULDN'T matter, but it does, and no one's doing active work to make it not matter. That's the only way queer actors won't be limited, but the industry needs to remove their bias. The issue isn't straight actors playing gay roles, or vice versa in itself. It's the other stuff in conjunction with it. Queer actors are given weaker marketability scores in comparison, so a straight actor will be cast more times than not for Straight AND Queer roles.
