JoJo Siwa says she's artist not singer following backlash to Olivia Rodrigo cover

Speaking about the Olivia Rodrigo cover on Call Her Daddy, JoJo said: "I will rarely, pretty much never, claim to be a singer. I will claim to be an artist or a performer but I know my vocal abilities and I also know my vocal abilities - what they are not. I'm very comfortable when it's my own stuff but other people's music, I don't do well singing."

"I won't touch other people's music. I'm scared of it. It always comes to bite me in the ass. I love performing. It's very contradicting because it's my favourite thing to do but the thing I'm most scared of."

"I was singing 'Traitor' by Olivia Rodrigo and she has a really high note in there. I was so far from hitting it. Not even close. Then one day i kinda got close. I've been doing this for a long time and I'm finally close. It's not good yet but watch."

"People took just that clip of me singing it and not doing it and my face turning bright red because I'm screaming trying to hit it and then they ran with just that."

Explaining how she felt about the negative response, JoJo said: "Again, I would hate it too. I do. I think it's hysterical. Anytime new hate rolls around, I'm like 'ow' but then a day goes by people get over it."

"I'm not a singer, I'm an artist who sings... badly"

Honestly it's so easy to be an "artist", dressing up in some weird **** with weird shapes and colors with little to no meaning, honestly, anyone could do it. Singing on the other hand is a real discipline, just like mastering any other instrument.

I actually think I understand why she takes the concept of her own 'artistry' so seriously. She is aiming to outwardly express some kind of internalised vision of how she'd like to represent herself externally (sonically and visually) via media.

If she (in her role as the artist at the centre) does not care about her own artistic vision then who will? Should she instead lie down and passively become some grotesque real life manifestation of an Ashley O type?

I really think this is an example of an artist with little to no power struggling to gain autonomy over their own vision (against corporate suits) and I think her desire to do just that is something we should be applauding and encouraging.

Particularly because she has the weight of the industry against her, designating her as an underdog in the midst of a David versus Goliath struggle against her own record label.

Since when do we adopt the role of being Melon types, throw scorn on the artist at the centre of a power struggle and take the side of the men in suits?

It's no shade, but who is her music for? I just don't get what the target audience is supposed to be.

From what she's said about 'gay pop', it seems apparent she's hoping to attract disenfranchised baby gays who want sparkly, maximalist 'Pop' (and therefore can't do Lana).

Why would she post that video? :gaycat7:

As someone who didn't grow up with her, I'm genuinely so confused. Who decided that this girl needed to be the next pop star? And why? She can't sing, can't write, can't dance well, doesn't have the look, the charisma, creative vision, etc. Literally checks zero boxes, except for having an existing fanbase from her childhood.

I believe she's read the hate comments underneath her own video and in an act of low self-esteem (and self masochism) that was her reaction.

Think about it, when did anyone actually see her since the online reaction to her own video and gauge from that her own state of mind?

What makes it even worse is the internet basically went 'meh' to the Brit Smith video and said "what we want is Miley's demo b***h" (as if she'd even have the legal rights to do so).

Cut to Miley: "what the f**k is this S***, I'm under pressure to release a 12 year old rockmafia demo to save JoJo Siwa's life"?

QFTC:

Do you really think Miley's happy to release something from before her voice shift?

I never understood this girl appeal. She has so many millions of views on YouTube. I understand I am not her demographic but it honestly just looks like she just a perody of what she believes a pop star is. Even in her mv when she was younger it felt like a joke just her dancing around and felt like she was playing a character for what kids tv shows see as a child star. everything she does now feels like bad imitation and worst aspects of what Miley, Gaga, and Kesha all did in the early 2010s.

These are what's known as influences. Her own childhood snapshot of when Pop was perfect and something she wanted to recreate.

You won't touch other artists songs but you'll steal them and claim you wrote them.

It's a story as old as time.
