Tropez Posted April 6 Posted April 6 These companies are some of the biggest consumer tech companies. However, they hold too much power and influence. Even going as far as being monopolistic. Should these companies all be split up? For instance, YouTube being a separate company Google search, and Android being its own thing. Or WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook all being separate companies? We also know these companies form a wing of US state propaganda and spying which like TikTok is an issue of state security. 1
Delirious Posted April 6 Posted April 6 America already has very strict monopoly policies. There's no need to split them up.

For instance Google has a monopoly on search engines. And has done numerous anti-competitive actions. It's why there's a legal case right now against Google.
tjspy Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I don't know enough about it to have nothing more than a meaningless opinion.

Which is why the American policy's on monopoly is working cause there's a legal case right now Apple is also notorious for having legal cases for monopolistic behaviour and many other companies get fines for it I'm not sure how good Europe's policies are tho Edited April 6 by Delirious

If the US has strong anti-monopoly laws it's obvious that these companies should be split up. For instance Microsoft and Activision should have never been allowed to merge.
Janet Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Idk how you can be such a capitalist heavy system but care about monopolies. Make it make sense America
Virgos Groove Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Nah, just nationalized (without compensation) and democratized. But since that's not hapenning ever, splitting them up would be a good option.
Archetype Posted April 6 Posted April 6 This might make sense as an idea, but I'd push for more strict regulation and a more open playing field for competition than separation. A lot of these companies within companies could not exist on their own, and rely on a core part of the larger company's services to pay for their operations. That's why I'd push for competition through opening up platforms, forced open sourcing of APIs, allowing third party app stores and services to run at a near-native level, etc. Sort of like how YouTube and Android continue to exist because Google Ads pays the bills, and without them being part of the same company, you can imagine neither existing for much longer. It's the same thing for Meta's products… IG is only profitable because of Meta's advertising platform, and Whatsapp is not profitable at all. Even with Apple, whose hardware and services are massively profitable on their own, it could make more sense to force Apple to allow third party app stores on the same platform to increase competition (the EU just did this).
EtherealCat Posted April 6 Posted April 6 what are you going to split apple up into? iphone 15, iphone 15 plus, iphone 15 pro, iphone 15 pro max? 3
RideOrDie Posted April 6 Posted April 6 taylor swift as a single person is bigger than them all, how we gonna split her up? 1
nadiamendell Posted April 6 Posted April 6 There definitely needs to be more regulation and they need to be forced to allow their products to work seamlessly together. Their anti-competitive practices need to be abolished.
magazine Posted April 6 Posted April 6 No. Youtube in itself is only viable because it's part of google. Otherwise, it wouldn't exist today.
