I wouldn't if I were her. It'd be one thing if they were auctioning off small items but personal birthday cards and letters is too far. Who gives a **** about the legacy when they don't value her relationship with him?

Why yikes? If no one in the family wants the item you might as well sell them instead of keeping it somewhere just for the sake of it 
When my grandma passed away last year we did the same. First everyone visited the house and pointed out which items they wanted and then we sold off/gave to charity the unwanted items even tho we didn't need the money.
