She had to settle because the media circus would be immense, the trial would take way too long to resolve and she realized it would be better off for her to give in to their demands. They'd been trying to make her settle ever since they charged her with tax fraud but she was the one who wanted to to go to court and prove her "innocence". They were never going to incarcerate her as super rich celebrity anyway but she didn't make things easy for her either by blaming it all to botched accounting business conducted by her father in law while she was COMPLETELY clueless. Case in point, her ex is also found guilty of tax fraud so it ran in the family. Now as a US citizen she can tax evade as much as she wants, but as a Spain resident it was illegal and she had to pay what she owed.
