Mikeymoonshine Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Renaissance was heavily influenced by like disco and house music and queer artists. That just doesn't appeal to straight people as much as the influences on cowboy carter. It's hard to compare them but they are both fantastic albums so the one with the wider appeal genrewise is doing better. Then again Renaissance still did great. 1
Kern Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Renaissance was very very gay and CC is just much more than that

Dante Silva Posted March 30 Posted March 30 There is a silent majority (a core demographic) of music fans who can't relate musically to and were not raised with/ socially conditioned by the hip-hop inflected direction Beyoncé explored on her fifth and sixth studio album's. She dropped a commercial 'Pop' element to her sound after her fourth album and outside of the lead single "Break my Soul", there were no other cuts from her seventh that retained enough melody with enough consistency to keep aficionados of non hip-hop inflected musical styles commercially engaged. In context of retaining a commercial element, "Cowboy Carter" (regardless of it being sonically "Country”) takes its baton from and restores a melodious aspect to Beyoncé's music that had been missing since her fifth album. For many this is the first Beyoncé album that has hit that melodious and commercial 'sweet-spot' since her fourth and that is why a particular demographic seeking non hip-hop inflected music have re-engaged and gotten back on board.
JoeAg Posted March 30 Posted March 30 it's far more adventurous and gripping imo, plus the hooks are better and it feels more forward thinking as a body of work
Illuminati Posted March 30 Posted March 30 It has more tracks and I suppose broader appeal, Renaissance also played a big role in forming the narrative and making people excited for more. The second act isn't clicking with me yet but I'm happy people are loving it 1
Bacardo Royale Posted March 30 Posted March 30 she's riding the coattails of her magnum opus renaissance
Reginald Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I am perched to see if CC retains longevity, or if it's frontloaded because of how much of a cultural moment Renaissance was. Rennie will remain as a timeless gem in my music playlists, while CC might never get revisited
Daddy Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Renaissance sounded too gay for the GP and I'm not joking. Renaissance did all the work here.

Not even Drake with a similar sound through a heteronormative filter could click with the wider GP. Cuff It being the smash it was isn't surprising is it's closet thing the album has to a wedding dancefloor / cookout song. When Alien Superstar and Heated were getting RTW streaming up and some hive wanted them as single, that was always a bad idea considering how gay they sound for GP.
