Normani & Sam Smith can't recover $700K legal bill after beating copyright lawsuit

6 months after Sam Smith and Normani beat a copyright lawsuit over their 2019 hit “Dancing With a Stranger,” a federal judge is refusing to force their accuser to reimburse their legal fees — a bill the stars say exceeded $700,000.

Normani and Sam have argued that they shouldn't be forced to foot the huge bill they incurred fending off the “frivolous and unreasonable" lawsuit, which claimed the duo had copied a little-known 2015 song.”

While U.S. District Judge Wesley L. Hsu dismissed the lawsuit last year, he ruled Monday that the case was not so completely baseless as to warrant punishing the accuser with paying the stars' massive legal bill.

Judge Hsu did rule that Smith and Normani could recover their legal “costs" from the plaintiffs, but such awards are typically far smaller than awards of attorney's fees. In earlier court filings, attorneys for Smith and Normani calculated such costs at $10,173.

700k is hardly effecting Sam's wallet.. but go off :toofunny3:

OT:  Sam & Normani won the lawsuit, Therefore..they should be able to get the plantiffs to pay the legal bills they incurred for having to defend themselves against this lying mess!

I think it would have been awarded to them if it was a more reasonable number. Having to pay 700,000k back for the ppl who sued them would have kept them in permanent debt. It was a nonsense lawsuit but those ppl are never going to make 700,000 in their entire lives

The label probably took care of the whole bill. And neither artist paid a single penny.

Hopefully Sam can give a bone to Normani and pay the bill

You all acting as if Normani does not have a "reported" net worth of $6M.

Well Sam has been successful enough to cover this I assume? Poor Normani, would suck to pay even half of that for her.

700k or half of that is still a large amount for a celebrity at Normani's level. She hasn't worked that much either in the past few years.

Maybe thats why she is now coming back?

Does she have to pay the $700k herself?
