BorderBoy Posted March 19 Posted March 19 (edited) Quote Canada will halt future arms sales to Israel following a non-binding vote in the house of commons. The foreign affairs minister, Mélanie Joly, told the Toronto Star her government would halt future arms shipments. “It is a real thing,” she said on Tuesday. The decision follows a parliamentary motion, introduced by the New Democratic party (NDP), that called on the governing Liberals to halt future arms exports to Israel. The New Democrats, who are supporting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's minority government, have expressed frustration with what they see as his failure to do enough to protect civilians in Gaza. The motion – which passed 204-117 with the support of Liberals, Bloc Québécois and the Green party – also called on Canada to work “towards the establishment of the state of Palestine". The successful vote late on Monday followed a last-minute deal between the Liberals and the NDP, which had previously called on the government to “recognize the state of Palestine". BorderBoy Posted March 19 Author Posted March 19 This is moral though it took more than 30,000 Palestinians' lives but it's better late than never I guess.
mercurialworld Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Embarrassingly late but we're taking steps I can't wait for the day no one is exporting weapons to them
Capris Groove Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Great. It's nice to see us not blindly follow the US, as we often do with conflict/war.
ZeroSuitBritney Posted March 20 Posted March 20 It's a win, but not a complete win. They are ceasing arms transfers to Israel, supporting the work of the ICC and the ICJ, and placing sanctions on extremist settlers... But at the same time, both officially recognizing Palestinian statehood and imposing sanctions on Israeli officials who incite violence were included in the original motion but unfortunately had to be removed for this to pass. 1
torturedpoet Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Someone else will just fill in the gap (and we all know who). This means nothing in the grand scheme of events especially since Canada is nowhere near the top 5 biggest weapons exporters to Israel. If there was any real money for them to make here they would be packing up shipments as we speak.
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted March 20 ATRL Moderator Posted March 20 Took too many deaths to get there, but good for Canada. But we also need to see this across the board.

Communion Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Don't worry, Joe Biden's just gonna take extra shifts at Fed-Ex to make up for any weapons Canada stops sending. 1 1

Anthinos Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Good. I am ashamed of how blindly my country supports Israel. I supported Israel in the beginning but I have also realized that what is happening there is wrong and inhumane and has nothing to do with Hamas but is collective punishment and genocide. It is time that Palestine is recognized as a state.
