Biden's "red line" on Gaza: Can’t have another 30,000 Palestinians dead

President Biden said in an interview on MSNBC on Saturday that he has a "red line" when it comes to the war in Gaza. "You can't have another 30,000 Palestinians dead as a consequence of going after (Hamas). There are other ways to deal with Hamas," he said.

Why it matters: This was the first time since the Hamas attack on October 7 that Biden said he has a "red line" for the Israeli military operation in Gaza.

Biden's remarks in the interview are another sign that the President's patience about the Netanyahu government is growing thin.

The president gave the "red line" remark in response to a question about a possible military operation in Rafah — something the administration has expressed serious concerns about.

Yes, but: Biden emphasized that he will not abandon Israel and will not stop the supply of weapons like Iron Dome in a way that Israel won't be able to defend itself.

Driving the news: President Biden was caught on a hot mic after his State of the Union address telling a Democratic senator he'd told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu they were going to have a "a come to Jesus meeting" about the situation in Gaza.

When asked in the interview what he meant by that, Biden said it's a phrase that is used in Delaware in a serious way.

"Bibi knows what I meant," he added.

What they are saying: Biden noted that Israel has the right to defend itself and go after Hamas, but emphasized that Netanyahu "must, must, must" pay more attention to preventing civilian casualties in Gaza.

So he's fine with 29,999 more dead Palestinians, got it. How about no more dead civilians, period? If a president can't even firmly say that, there's a problem.

And yet he’s still sending American tax payer dollars for Israeli weapons…

The “hot mic” moment was so obviously staged. It’s quite clear that the Democratic pivot on this genocide will come in the form of:

“Israel did nothing wrong. What Netanyahu did was bad. Mostly because of not getting hostages back… but I guess also the dead Palestinians (kinda). Israel is a peaceful country and they deserve better :heart2:“

Keep heckling these ghouls. Make genocide a red line for voters.

So is another 29,000 acceptable by his standards?

Disgusting. The way he tip toes around Bibi”s emotions is embarrassing. You’d think Netanyahu was the one calling the shots in the US’s foreign policies

More and more you are seeing the relationship between Biden and Bibi sour.(they didn’t have. A great one to begin with)  Biden and the admin have been changing their strategy with dealing with Israel and it’s obviously getting under Bibis skin.

It’s also a good thing to see Biden and his administration finally starting to put more pressure on Israel and actually start to criticize them publicly.  I think the fact they have been doing that says a lot about what’s going on behind the scenes.

hopefully this shift continues and the admin can broker a ceasefire of some sort which could hopefully lead to a end to this conflict. Hopefully that would happen before a Trump win (a possibility)  because if that happens you won’t even get this mild criticism from him or his admin. 💀

Why so many dislikes of this post? I get it’s very naive but he has good intentions yall :skull:

I love your optimism sis but this was guessed weeks ago that Biden knew his Israel policy was really bad and his voters were frustrated with him so his team wanted to fabricate fake tension between the two so that voters could be like “well at least Biden is trying! It’s Bibi’s fault only” when the reality is this is all charades. The US wants Palestinians gone and dead and Biden could enforce a ceasefire whenever he wanted but doesn’t want to because he believes Israel’s mission needs to happen (long term goal of displacing as many Palestinians as possible for more land theft and control of a pivotal geographic location for American hegemony in the Mid East). It is what it is unfortunately.

Oh **** that.  He perfectly fine with the slaughter of 60,000 people but somehow 60,001 crosses a line?

This is fake posturing from Biden and you know it. He very clearly seeks Netanyahu's validation above all else and he's only upset because he's not getting it. :skull:

Wait until he finds out the real devastation and death toll he's enabled could end up already being as high as 200,000.

I don't think 200,000 is accurate.  A 10% ratio of militians at the bare minimum (given the Mossad intelligence is more than capable to detect the Hamas HQ) would reach nearly 90% fatalities among the Hamas army and a give total victory to Israel by now.

You don't think more Palestinians than the official 30k would have died already from starvation and disease...? :rip:

Haven't you thought that they're not even aiming for a 9:1 ratio of civilians killed to militants? The Israelis want nothing but wanton destruction and death.

200,000 might be too high, but I think it will be much higher than the 30,000 number we have seen, since there are going to be many buried under rubble and health ministry staff are just counting the dead in hospitals and reports from doctors and other medical staff. Since almost all the hospitals have been attacked and destroyed, the numbers are going to be much higher, even without adding the numbers buried under rubble.

One of the main weapons the US is providing are 2000 pound unguided dumb bombs, which is not the sort of thing you use for pinpoint strikes.

https://edition.cnn.com/gaza-israel-big-bombs/index.html

So there is probably not a lot of precision targeting going on. Remember, the IDF were told by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, that he has "released all restraints" on the troops.

Here are the projections for the death toll over the next six months under different scenarios. The numbers were based on a possible ceasefire in February and since these are a projection, they can be added to the current death toll.

"With no epidemics occurring, the projection for the ceasefire scenario would be 6,550 excess deaths, for the status quo scenario 58,260 excess deaths, and for the escalation scenario 74,290 excess deaths."

"With epidemics occurring, the projection for the ceasefire scenario would be 11,580 excess deaths, for the status quo scenario 66,720 excess deaths, and for the escalation scenario 85,750 excess deaths."

The report is a collaborative effort between researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and is funded by the UK Humanitarian Innovation Hub.

Biden appears to be doing everything he can to help Netanyahu reach the higher number.

I guess we will see how brave he is and if he backs this up once Israel takes over Rafah.

That's actually so sad. I struggled with the word Genocide being thrown around with around 30K dead (which is of course already very horrific but it's not that crazy considering the scale of the invasion). But 10% of the population dead in a couple months is insane.
