Born to Run Posted April 27 Posted April 27 53 minutes ago, supaspaz said: REVOLUTION 0 Average: 4.75 High Score: 9 (@a_d_22) Low score: 1 (@Alldeezy, @creativity.) Last place goes to this desultory Boygenius ballad, sung by Phoebe Bridgers, about falling in love online with actor Paul Mescal during the coronavirus pandemic – a song so detested by voters that it couldn't even beat a 43-second instrumental. Best bit: its original title was "Paul Is Dead," after the Beatles conspiracy theory advanced by supposedly hidden messages on the track "Revolution 9" from The White Album ATRL says…: "Revolution 0 more like I should have given this song a 0," @Ewan Chaos snarked. "Them struggle whispering about wanting to kick someone's teeth took me out," @glitch cackled. "I don't wanna die/that's a lie" is the essential Phoebe Bridgers line and it's the first one out? I hate it here
Suilen Posted April 27 Posted April 27 I didn't mind boygenius in the end, and I might even give Phoebe another try, but the Dacus-led songs bored me to death.
Reverie Posted April 27 Posted April 27 1 minute ago, supaspaz said: Stylistically or because of her specifically? I think the answer is both! The song stylistically and she just keeps piling on the drama and it's exhausting for me when I don't love her singing
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted April 27 Author ATRL Moderator Posted April 27 LETTER TO AN OLD POET Average: 5.31 High Score: 10 (@a_d_22) Low score: 1 (@creativity.) The self-referential closer from The Record – the ending flips the chorus of Boygenius’ own 2018 song “Me & My Dog” – is a darkly humorous takedown of a toxic ex, as Phoebe Bridgers secretly enjoys watching them tumble down the stairs and imagines happiness is just within reach. “Letters to an Old Poet” is the lowest-ranking track in this rate to receive a 10. Best bit: “You made me feel like an equal/But I'm better than you/And you should know that by now” ATRL says…: “These lyrics are so...contrived,” @glitch sniffed. “It really sounds like a high schooler's attempt at writing poetry "
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted April 27 Author ATRL Moderator Posted April 27 The more I listen to this one, the more I love it. "You're not special, you're evil" is a fucking hilarious line.

creativity. Posted April 27 Posted April 27 I gave 1s to over half of these songs there are exactly 4 good tracks on that boygenius album!
glitch Posted April 27 Posted April 27 Thank god we whacked out some of those lesbian snoozes Letter to an old poet is potentially the worst song in this whole rate, glad others agreed! None of the Olivia songs are much of a loss. Amarae's was basically just an extended intro to Fountain Baby so I'm not mad about that one going either. No Victoria songs out yet

On this languid ode to friendship, Lucy Dacus cracks inside jokes and expresses hope that the band members will always be in each other's lives. But if you don't like Boygenius, you're not going to like a song about how much Boygenius likes Boygenius Best bit: "I don't need the symbol of a scar/So put down the knife, we're not swapping blood/Isn't it enough that we stripped down to our skin?" This being my highest rated Boygenius song and it's second out

4Real Posted April 28 Posted April 28 The only thing I like about Boygenius is Julien Baker's voice. Lucy Dacus sounds like death and Phoebe Bridgers sounds like funeral. Logical is v pretty!

creativity. Posted April 28 Posted April 28 I'm here. I feel like Zach Bryan has to start taking more hits soon. It's not like us to be this kind to a male country artist!

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted April 28 Author ATRL Moderator Posted April 28 GIRL I'VE ALWAYS BEEN Average: 5.51 High Score: 10 (@supaspaz) Low score: 2 (@glitch) Not enough of you were around for the Lilith Fair moment! This strummy sketch, a bonus track on Guts, is a delightful throwback to those coffeehouse bards-cum-feminist icons of the ‘90s, as Olivia Rodrigo brushes off a man who didn’t realize what he signed up for. She may not be a perfect 10, but “Give I’ve Always Been” is. Best bit: “So don’t say that I've been actin’ different/I'm nothin’ if I’m not consistent” ATRL says…: It was “too going down to the country barn” for @Alldeezy.

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted April 28 Author ATRL Moderator Posted April 28 FEAR AND FRIDAY'S (POEM) Average: 5.53 High Score: 9.5 (@Quicksand) Low score: 1 (@Alldeezy) Zach Bryan sets the table with this spoken word reflection on living in the moment, appreciating what you have and approaching the world with an open heart. After his final wordy stanza, accompanied only by some light acoustic guitar, Zach charmingly lets out an audible sigh of relief. Best bit: “I've learned that every waking moment is enough and еxcess never lеads to better things/It only piles and piles atop the things that are already abundantly in front of you” ATRL says…: “We don't need this,” @Ewan Chaos said, though he conceded it was a “cute enough opener I guess.”
