CO-STAR

Average: 8.18

High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @creativity., @Reverie, @glitch, @Born to Run)

Low score: 2 (@a_d_22)

Are you all astrology followers? Amaarae wraps up her run in this rate with this cheeky hyperpop mating call, named for the popular horoscope app, in which Zodiac sign trumps all. Serving as the second single from Fountain Baby, the music video features a pageant-slash-street race of prospective lovers, won by the Cancer.

Best bit: “Aries bitches bad/But damn, I'll pass, please”

ATRL says…: “This actually bops,” @Alldeezy admitted. @Ewan Chaos was excited by the line “Tease me like a Taurus”: “I fuckin WON!” (As one of those horrible Libra bitches, I did not win.) And this is the last time you will have to hear @a_d_22 complain about this album, which he called “horrible, one of the worst I’ve listened to in a long time.” He deemed “Co-Star” simply “cringey af.”

I'm bummed all the Little Fountain Babies couldn't be here to have a meltdown over Amaarae losing to Boygenius.

There's no accounting for taste

One day someone will need to explain to me the grip that astrology has on the homosexual community.

Olivia is up next. Did the flop or the bigger flop make the top three?

Horoscopes are like charts but for people. Gays love to know when they're having a smash era or flopping into irrelevance

GET HIM BACK!

Average: 8.24

High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @Into The Void, @4Real, @creativity.)

Low score: 5 (@a_d_22)

The best Avril Lavigne song that she never recorded, this third single from Guts is part kickass blast of insanely hooky pop-rock, part ass-kicking comedy routine about a loser ex that Olivia Rodrigo still kind of wants even as she plots her revenge. Yet “Get Him Back!” (a double entendre that definitely earns the exclamation point) somehow snapped her streak of top ten hits, debuting and peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, despite a prime performance slot at the Video Music Awards and a shot-on-iPhone music video boosted by an Apple promotional campaign. Fortunately, the voters in this rate treated it better, in line with a critical consensus that saw Billboard, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and USA Today all name it one of the best songs of the year.

Best bit: How many one-liners will you let me include? It could be “He said he's six-foot-two, and I'm like, ‘Dude, nice try’” or “So I miss him some nights when I'm feeling depressed/'Til I remember every time he made a pass on my friend” or “But I am my father's daughter, so maybe I could fix him,” but I’ll go with “I wanna meet his mom/Just to tell her her son sucks.”

ATRL says…: “I know people are shocked that this flopped, but it's kinda my least favorite of the upbeat tracks on here,” @Ewan Chaos reasoned. “It's good, but gets annoying for me after a while.” @a_d_22 thought “everything is all reused.”

I just realized Olivia's top two songs both had punctuation in the title. Coincidence?

What's odd is that, if you don't count that intro track, Fountain Baby was the last album to lose a song. But then it struggled to get beyond the middle of the pack.

So third place has more 10's than any song in the rate, but I'm curious if anyone was actually rooting for it to win.

NOT STRONG ENOUGH

Average: 8.25

High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @a_d_22, @4Real, @kandicha, @MP2K, @Achilles., @Born to Run)

Low score: 1 (@creativity.)

Call them the comeback kids! After getting dragged in the early stretch of this rate, Boygenius nearly won the whole thing with this fourth single from The Record about mental illness, self-martyrdom and not feeling strong enough to be there for your partner. (Yes, that is a Sheryl Crow reference in the refrain.) It received more 10’s than any other entry on the countdown, but is also the top-ranking track to receive a 1. If that score had been any higher, it would have emerged victorious – as it did on last year’s Uproxx critics poll. “Not Strong Enough” also proved to be a smash among the NPR set, finishing as the most-played song of the year on adult alternative radio, and among industry folks, winning Grammys for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song plus earning a Record of the Year nomination.

Best bit: the repetition of “Always an angel, never a god” on the bridge builds to a truly euphoric release

ATRL says…: “Unfortunately, even I cannot deny how good this track is,” @Ewan Chaos conceded. @a_d_22 called The Record the “best album of 2023.”

Too low I fear.

It would've been hilarious if Boygenius somehow pulled off the #1

But Olivia vs. Victoria it is then

Thank god for that

Not really a bad song by any means but I didn't want them winning on principle!

My childhood self would have loved this music video. I was obsessed with the Santa Monica Pier and insisted on going every time I visited my grandparents.

The top four songs scored 8.28, 8.26, 8.25 and 8.24, so @creativity., your 1 really did keep "Not Strong Enough" from victory.
