I'M THE ONE

Average: 6.87

High Score: 9 (@kandicha, @creativity.)

Low score: 1 (@Born to Run)

What if Meredith Grey's "pick me, choose me, love me" speech was a song with a spare, apprehensive beat vaguely reminiscent of Beyoncé's "Mine"? Enter Victoria Monét, head over heels in unrequited love, begging a man to finally notice that she's the one – though at least she's got a sense of humor about the desperation of her plight.

Best bit: "I could be riding horseback towards you/Slow motion on a beach, titties bouncin' and everything"

ATRL says…: "This builds up but then kinda goes nowhere?" @glitch shrugged.

I love the outro. The song itself was on the verge of sounding like Keyshia Cole's Just Want it to be Over but it never took off!

Thank you, king. I'm not sure about you, but it's a rough one for me, as I'm losing three 10's and three 9.5's today.

TOURNIQUET

Average: 6.87

High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @a_d_22)

Low score: 3 (@MP2K)

Struggling with the demands of his career, which have ravaged his mental health and his marriage, Zach Bryan feels like a man bleeding out from a stab wound. This roots rock stunner is a gentle offer of grace and support through tough times, though it’s unclear who – a lover? a friend? God? – is reaching out that proverbial helping hand.

Best bit: “I bandage up your body and your bones and your bad days, too”

HOLLYWOOD

ft. Earth, Wind & Fire and Hazel Monét

Average: 7.04

High Score: 9 (@supaspaz, @Into The Void)

Low score: 4 (@Alldeezy, @glitch)

A simple midtempo jam about maintaining a sense of perspective in the show business machine, featuring vocals from Earth, Wind & Fire’s Philip Bailey and some closing coos courtesy of Victoria Monét’s infant daughter, Hazel. When “Hollywood” was nominated last year for Best Traditional R&B Performance, Hazel became the youngest Grammy nominee ever.

Best bit: “Get lost in all the glitter and the bling”

I gave this a 7 probably so right on the mark

One of your most generous Zach Bryan scores...at a 6.

I wasn't that nice to him either but his music isn't my thing and I actually like country

My score is looking a touch generous in retrospect, but those gentle harmonies are so gorgeous.

The thing is, he's not that country. He really veers into roots rock and Americana with a lot of his music.

Oops I meant the Zach song. Hollywood is an 8 for me, no complaints! Especially as the harmonies kick in after the second chorus no way that's a bad song

The song was ok, and it reminded me that I should really check out some of Earth, Wind & Fire's stuff one of these days.

RECKLESS & SWEET

Average: 7.04

High Score: 10 (@Born to Run)

Low score: 3 (@a_d_22)

Money is a double-edged sword for Amaarae – both a blessing and, on this lead single from Fountain Baby, too much of a good thing, as she finds herself enmeshed with a gold digger who just wants to “get her boobs done.” At least Amaarae is having some fun in the music video, where beautiful women lounge all over her to the Afrobeats groove.

Best bit: “The thought of me spendin’ gives you goosebumps”

ATRL says…: @a_d_22 damned with faint praise: “not as dumb lyrically as some of the other songs and her voice is less annoying.”

Another tie broken by @Born to Run's 10. Congratulations to Amaarae.

Does anyone actually know how to pronounce Amaarae? I've been saying it two different ways in my head. And both could be wrong!

Um, this one's great, though.
