No because you can be a full white person born and raised in Guyana, and you are still technically Guyanese.

It’s like how there’s literal Asians in Jamaica who are true Jamaicans with the accent and all, but their ethnicity is still Asian.

He is not Black and he knows to stay over in his pond in the UK because the rap industry would snatch him bald over here in the States with that cosplay

“And you are still technically Guyanese” yes, your nationality would be Guyanese. Your race would be white. And your ethnicity would be wherever your white parents are from / their lineage. Yes it’s possible for a white person to have a long lineage in Guyana but a majority of them are not, and they’d have their own ethnic identity besides the typical multi racial ethnic Guyanese (South Asian, African, and Native American). There’s no reason to assume Central Cee can’t be 25% a mix of south Asian / African / Native.

I get the frustration that he’s not black / black “enough” to profit off of black culture (although in todays popular music just about every genre and aesthetic you do has some origin in black culture), I’m just trying to make sure we all know the difference between race, nationality, and ethnicity in 2024.

Guyanese people are not an ethnic group. They have ethnicities there. It’s giving English mother and english related father, since Guyana was a british colony. If he actually had an afro-indian guyanese father he would be showing him around for the street cred. If he’s not better bet on white

"he usually declines to reveal his ethnicity...." for me :dies:

Shouldn't really matter what he is. He's got talent.

That being said...

Idk if it's just me but it seems mixed people get a lot of sh*t for no reason.

I get sh*t from caucasians for not looking white but I also get sh*t from black people for looking too white. I'm literally a mix of both, like??? I get it from family members. Sometimes jokingly but sometimes it comes across as pure hatred

Some of us métis folks can't win. I've been called all sorts from 'mongrel' to 'n*****'. I've been told I need to get more sun, which is far from being the worst thing I've been told but it's annoying af, like... mind your business all of you.

People are so weird when it comes to colour and ethnicity, get tf over it. Keep your mouths firmly shut.

Guyanese is a nationality. Most Guyanese I know are of East Indian/South Asian descent or East Indian and African mixed.

The remaining ethnic groups are African, indigenous, Portuguese, Chinese and different ethnic mixes, so I agree...saying you're mixed with Guyanese doesn't clear anything up.

Don't know who this person is but why is it shocking that he's mixed?

Chlle, this is blowing up into quite a...thing. And I totally get why.

For those who may be confused / surprised, his ethnicity has always been this mysterious "thing" that he made a point of never addressing even when asked directly.

What's so odd about that is that the UK is way more embracing of non-Black rappers than most spaces and in many ways the added audience they bring sees them tend to be bigger than the Black rappers commercially. Rarely critically, but definitely commercially. From Potter Payper to Aitch to Arrdee and a handful more.

So, put simply, there was never any real benefit to him being so ambiguous about it.

IMO, it was a short-sighted move to appeal to all... while maintaining "credibility" from a perceived biological proximity to Blackness. He definitely leaned into this heavy with the braids, the constant durag, etc. It's giving cosplay, it's giving appropriation, it's giving blur the lines on purpose.

There's no other way around it, because who in 2024 is "hesitant" about saying where they're from?! Rep your set!

He really could have just been upfront about it from the start of his career and I promise his success and audience composition would be exactly the same. He's pretty unproblematic beyond that and makes bops. Hell, there's even a marketable angle of him leaning into his Asian and mixed ethnicities alongside his affection for Black culture.

Now, rather ironically, his undoing (or at least a huge dent to his image) is coming from something he had no real or justifiable reason to hide in the first place.

Sidebar: if that pic above really is his daddy, then Cench absolutely hasn't got a drop of Black in him lol.

There are many races in Guyanana, but almost all of the Guyanese people I've encountered are Indo-Caribbean (of full Indian ancestry, but culturally Caribbean) and based on what he's finally spilled, that Daddy definitely looks to be Indo-Carribean mixed with Chinese (per Cench). Thus making Cench essentially Asian and White. Which there is absolutely nothing wrong with. The whole Scooby Doo investigation feels dumb, but only because he made for it all lol.
