Same b I’m 26 and it seems like there’s really nothing to do apart from slave away for pennies for some corporation

But I can assure you, that will still get you further than a masters. Education is a business first and foremost

The best way to get prospects I’ve found is through marketing yourself and creating a network on LinkedIn as bleh as that sounds

What did you you your BA in? Like what kind of industry are you in

Digital and network publishing, the industry suitable for me would in editing or graphic desing but I got no luck with these so far

but this is kinda what I wanted to read. My gut was telling me it's not worth it for years now and I've been in a cycle of pushing going for it to the next year

either way, you are still very young and you can always change careers. people change jobs and go back to school in their 40s and 50s. it's never too late, so don't rush into something just because you feel your age creeping up on you

If you’re American, probably not.

A lot of Master’s programs in the United States are cash cows for the school. The programs tend to offer less aid, and the career outcomes may not be worth the debt (and 1-2 years of lost income if you’re attending full time).

If you find a program that’ll give you a sizable scholarship, it may be worth it. I got my MPP paid for by the school, which made it an easier decision, but a lot of my classmates were spending money on a degree with no real tangible career goals, and that’s never fun.

I met cool people but it sucked so bad. So many useless subjects etc. I ended up working for the govt.

A part time Masters Degree taken remotely in a field that doesn’t fulfill a hard requisite for a job (like a nursing degree would for example) will most likely be a waste of time and money and you’ll just be miserable working and studying in the evenings and weekends.

I don't know what to do

I work since I finished my BA but I don't want to work here my whole life. I wanted to study part-time and get MA (Visual Communication), It's the only course that might interest me even tho some people told me that I won't learn much there. Studying part-time for MA just seems like a total waste of money and time. It's on the weekends and it's mostly remote so I don't think I'll even make any connections there. But on the other hand, I kinda don't know what else to do to not end up at my job forever! I'm wondering if people here regret getting their Master's or think it's better to have one and sacrifice those 2 years. Or should I keep that money to myself and find another way for a better job

meh its not even as respected as much to have a masters as it used to be.  I only have much Bachelors and its not like you can't grow in a career. Is there more upper level jobs in your company that dont require a MA?  Im sure theres higher level jobs. Plus it seems companies value experience over a degree.

From my personal experience, the masters degree in itself is not what's the most important. Now that I'm working, it's clear that the only thing that makes my masters degree matter to any company is that I did it in a very prestigious university.

The prestige of the university you get your masters degree from and the connections you get to make there are what's the most important. The degree is not that worth it in itself. I personally wouldn't recommand it if it's remote and you don't get to make the connections.

I work for the govt now and it's kind of a dead-end even if the pay is not that bad and there are benefits, it's just kind of a 'is it really all there is to it?' type of a job

I’m applying to my masters now just for the connections. I am not a social person by nature, and an art career is highly social by design. So I’m going for the studio visits, the community, access to professors who can offer guidance etc. I think all of that will be worth the money because the talent is there baby

ME TOO OMG! hi twin

Graphic design industry is nuts. I have like 3 years of experience in that but it seems so fruitless. The wages aren’t high enough

I was going to go for a masters but they wanted 10k and I was like huh… do I really want to live a broke student life again? no way

In our industry it’s more so the projects you’ve worked on and how good your portfolio is

Oh girl you GET it

I spent some money and time last year to make a professional portfolio and it did nothing for me. No one even opened it. It's so frustrating and demotivating

Maybe you can pursue a more interdisciplinary masters degree, which would be probably harder to finish but at the same time can expand your future opportunities. It also depends on which university and which city/country you do your masters in.

Posted

It all depends on your country, at least. In some countries, you can study at the expense of a government grant.

As mentioned above, a lot depends on your specialty and field. I am completing a master's degree on a grant, it is very laborious.

I went because I won grants, but it's so annoying and not 100% useful.

well i slayed my business graduation so i won a 100% scholarship to do a master degree in the same University, i did like 50% of it and left cuz i found it useless back then and now i regret it. So my answer is: Yes it's worth it.

Master’s Degree - bad idea right?

It really depends on your career path. To get jobs nowadays people are looking for work experience more than anything.
