naval23 Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Easily Mary. The fact she was still pushing albums debuting with almost 700k over 15+ years into her career is insane 3
I Melt Away Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) The 3-tie right now! Janet's Janet. was sexually liberated R&B at its best and The Velvet Rope was an important precursor to alternative R&B. I voted for Mariah because I feel she was also an important figure in R&B starting from the 90s into the 2000s and her vocal styling and techniques laid groundwork into future R&B singers internationally. We need to give Mary her flowers too for always being R&B first and foremost all her career and smashing for years. Edited February 17 by I Melt Away 1
Lightbringer007 Posted February 17 Posted February 17 all 3 have had such a huge impact in their own ways, truly 3 of the greatest female artists of all time
Wicked Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I'm gonna say Mary, whose impact isn't discussed as much as it should. 1
Stankonia Posted February 17 Posted February 17 1/ Janet (pioneered new jack swing and alternative R&B, was at the forefront of the neo soul movement, was highly influential visually and when it comes to performing and album concepts) > 2/ Mary (pioneered hip-hop soul, took what Janet did with Control and pushed it further by fully merging hip-hop and R&B, popularized the remix feat. rapper formula, popularized the ghetto fabulous aesthetic) >>>>> 3/ Mariah (contributed to popularize R&B globally) All 3 are legends and Mariah is an amazing artist but she wasn't nearly as impactful as the other two when it comes to R&B (no other female contemporary r&b singer is). Her main impact is helping popularize melismatic singing among white audiences and helping make the genre commercially viable outside of the US. Janet and Mary played a crucial role in making R&B what it is today.
Nippy'sReceipts Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) Janet Jackson hands down because the Control album inspired new Jack swing which literally became R&B music, and what she did for music videos and choreography. Janet started one of the best eras for R&B/pop and made it crossover and global as a dance phenomenon . New Kids on the Block, Bobby Brown, Paula Abdul, Kid n Play, Kriss Kross, Usher, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Britney , Ciara, Aaliyah, NSYNC and all the “dancing” performers are all the kids of Janet in a way . Janet started the dancing era in R&B and Michael even copied her new Jack swing sound and said he got inspired from Janet’s Rhythm Nation social consciousness/military style Outfits. Not that Janet or even Mariah didn't also do that but Marys take on it was impactful, and we still see it today in artists like Summer Walker. I guess I would say Mary brought the Blues to the center again, to me Mary is a Blues woman. 1
Nippy'sReceipts Posted February 17 Posted February 17 It’s hard to imagine what music in the late 90s teen pop explosions (Britney, Justin/NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Pink , Spice Girls) and teen R&B explosions (Usher, Destinys Child, Aaliyah, Mya) would be without Janet . I think it was Jessica Simpson or maybe Robyn or someone who said because she couldn’t dance , it was hard to compete Because the culture /MTV/videos practically required it if you were a teen pop act .

In that aspect she reminds me a lot of Nina Simone. 1
VioletsandRoses Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Mary hands down. The QUEEN of r&b. Don’t get it twisted
robbyds Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Janet definitely. Her landmark albums were the cornerstones of modern R&B music. Also, Mary and Mariah both said that they were influenced/inspired by her so... 1

stevyy Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Mariah got a special Grammy for her incluence on "black music" (1 week ago). All three are legends of R&B. Janet probably takes it. Miss Janet did everything she could, pushed all boundaries aside and then some. <3
Bloodflowers. Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Queen of Hip Hop Soul I am obsessed with Love & Life album lately, Mary J. Blige has the best album runs of all time tbh
CityPop Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Respect for all three but I am going with Janet. The Velvet Rope is the blueprint when it comes to alternative R&B.
The7thStranger Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Janet, definitely, but all three were massively influential to the acts that followed.
