ArtForFreedom Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Madonna won in the end by dethroning all of them with 1
Mitsouko Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Not really. We Are A Mess is a gimmicky publicity stunt in song form, while Crazy For You is one of the premier pop ballads of the decade. Madonna, who clearly didn’t need it, dodged a bullet. 11 1

LittleStarmen Posted February 16 Posted February 16 He was trying to justify the voice thing which is a lie. She was quite hurt for not being invited. Everyone thought she was just a **** that couldnt sing hut Funny how she surpasssed all these 80s acts quickly 12 2
UnusualBoy Posted February 16 Posted February 16 It was always weird to me how she wasn't invited considering they were inviting all the big acts from that time but w.e.
Gottasadae Posted February 16 Posted February 16 They really thought she wouldn't last and look at her now - booked and busy 6 1

We Are The World is a classic and just received a documentary on Netflix. It's iconic which is why you can use a platform like Kimmel to talk about it like how they do. Madonna is a legend and definitley surpassed the relevancy of everyone involved (except Michael Jackson, of course) but if you played We Are The World and Crazy For You to Average Joe's on the street the former would be the most recognized and remembered one. 10 1 2
Kylizzle Posted February 17 Posted February 17 They didn't invite her but did invite Cyndi Lauper, a mess 1 1

Doesn't change the fact that WATW is a f***** bad song 6 1

PrettyHurts Posted February 17 Posted February 17 didnt notice her absence she had enough hits in the 80s

So they needed Cindy more since she was super famous when they were recording it.
Navyboy20 Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Completely unrelated by Lionel Richie looks f*****g INCREDIBLE to be 75 years old 6
Zaynsus Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Yeah, I saw their documentary on Netflix and thought it was weird that they had to "choose" between Madonna and Cindy. They invited dozens of people to sing but they couldn't make space for two of them ? Anyway, it's not like they needed her as the song ended up doing really well and Madge didn't need them either ! 3 1

brenda-walsh Posted February 17 Posted February 17 its so interesting to look back and see how Madonna and Cyndi were pitted against each other and everyone thought Cyndi was the "real artist" who would have a longlasting career
Sugar-Rush Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I was gonna say that the song was too cheesy and preachy for prime Madonna, but then I remembered that she recorded Love Makes the World Go Round and performed it at Live Aid. She kinda dodged a bullet though. 1
Raiden Posted February 17 Posted February 17 WATW came exactly in 1985 — that was Madge's sophomore year of fame. It was just a bit too early for her since the project was more focused on legends who have been stars for multiple years. Cyndi on the other hand was perfect timing as she has become a legend by the mid 80s, given that she burst into global fame in the early 80s. 2
Kodak Energy Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) Madonna didn’t have a lot industry respect at the time. She didn’t win any Grammys in the 80s, and people WRONGLY saw her as mainly being about shock value. She really turned things around though and had one of the best careers ever. The single did well too, it sold 20 million physical singles, one of the ten best selling singles ever and raised 150 million for Africa. Edited February 17 by Kodak Energy
