Does this album and era remind anyone else of the mid-late career "mature" albums from pop legends like MJ's History, Ray of Light, American Life, Velvet Rope etc? The interludes, the experimentation, the touching on political themes. It just feels so iconic

Her Butterfly wbk

Just For Fun is one of the most cinematic, and beautiful songs on the album

I honestly can't believe ppl mentioning chopping the song from their playlist. It is the most somber and broodiest song on the album and provides such a distinct sonical environment against the other songs

I love Beyoncé's lower register - it is equally as impressive as her upper

At least we have Beyonce still carrying the flame :jonny:

Not that they are comparable but I love that I've gotten Future Nostalgia, Renaissance, Cowboy Carter and (soon) Radical Optimism from my mothers this decade :jonny: quality pop ONLY

I could write an entire essay about how Madge and Janet literally wrote the current popstar playbook, like the getting mainstream hits in your first decade and building your commercial empire then proving yourself artistically with a leftfield album has been taken up my Bey, Rih and Taylor now

'Butterfly' marked Carey's first emancipation; a breakaway from a parasitic partner, label and the syrupy balladry that had characterised the early part of her sanitised diamond-certified success story. 'Butterfly' was a creative risk – and rebirth – that didn't match the commercial height of its predecessors, but stands now as the crowning jewel of artistic expression in her vast discography.

Quote

With Butterfly, Carey found another career that proved to be artistically and commercially successful. The album would be widely considered magnum opus and a remarkable achievement. She would continue to work with hip-hop producers and rappers, essentially becoming so identified with the practice of singing over rap beats that when other artists produced similar pop singles, they were accused of biting off her style. As Jessica Littles noted, “[Butterfly] also catalyzed the pop music trend of collaborating with hip-hop artists (every other 'pop diva' would soon follow suit).”  Vincent Anthony agrees, asserting, "In the late 1990s, as R&B and hip-hop became more and more mainstream in pop music, singers began displaying a bit of hip-hop, rap-style singing. Most would credit this trend to the rappers, however, Mariah Carey was one of the first to release such rhythmic, rhyme-riddled recordings.”  Butterfly is rightly heralded as the finest work from Carey's lengthy discography, and it would prove to become one of the finest albums of the 1990s.

:jonny: we love growth and risk. That sound is so common now thanks to Mariah, but it was definitely innovative and explorative then.

I keep coming back to II Hands II Heaven. Such a gorgeous and dreamy track! Def one of her best songs for sure. The 1 2 3 punch of Desert Eagle, Riiverdance, and II Hands II Heaven is insane:jonny:
