Pretty unnessecary. As if any commercial flight ever crashed because the passengers weighted too much.

Good. While they're at it, can they fix the mess of me wearing an XS t-shirt but it having the same price as an XXL one despite having half the material? Im tired of subsidizing fat people!

Good. Next step should be dynamic pricing based on body weight.

Disgusting suggestion

FAKE NEWS... REAL WEIGHT NUMBERS COME ON THE NEXT BOARDING GATE

Posted

pilot here… this is all about weight and balance and makes it way safer. almost all airlines just guess the weight of everyone and is not an accurate representation. a lot of airlines use an estimate of ~200 lbs per passenger but what if the average weight is actually greater than that? or what if it’s less than that and they loaded the bags wrong and all of a sudden you’re out of limits?

But are they going to charge people a fee for being overweight? :deadbanana:

That's like asking people wearing XL and above to pay more for their clothes because there's more fabric used.

Technically makes total sense but it's also incredibly rude and unethical.

I don’t think it’s rude, it just is what it is.

If you read the article

Reading articles…on ATRL? What is this concept?

I know that this is just an attempt by Finnair to re-calibrate their average passenger weights for weight distribution, but I could absolutely see a future where airlines like Ryanair or Spirit offer discounts to lighter passengers or charge extra for heavier passengers, because that does directly impact fuel consumption. The ethics are certainly murky at best, but during some far-off fuel price spike, there might be a business case strong enough to surmount the ethics.

This makes so much sense

Very interesting thanks for sharing. I know some modern trains have weight sensors in the carriages to indicate load distribution and encourage people to move to quieter parts of the train. I wonder if aeroplanes could implement similar technology?

it would be interesting. but id be shocked if airlines paid for something like that, they’re profit margins are so thin anyway that that would just add to extra spending

Who the heck is going to get weighed voluntarily? They should have scales attached to the seats. They’ll know instantly who to escort off. Planes have weight limits. It’s not safe to fly with an entire plane full of morbidly obese passengers.
