Bosque Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Quote The Australian academic Yang Hengjun has been given a suspended death sentence by a Chinese court, after five years in detention on espionage charges Yang was arrested in 2019 at Guangzhou airport, accused of spying for an undisclosed foreign country. The 57-year-old pro-democracy blogger is an Australian citizen who was born in China. He was tried in a one-day, closed-door hearing in Beijing in May 2021, with a verdict not publicly disclosed. The sentence revealed on Monday is formally described as a death sentence with a two-year reprieve. It is a relatively common ruling that allows death sentences to be commuted to 25 years, or life in prison after two years of good behaviour. China is believed to be the world’s biggest user of the death penalty, but there is no publicly available data. China’s court system is notoriously opaque, with conviction rates above 99.9% and very few cases overturned for wrongful convictions. In November, Yang’s sons wrote to the Anthony Albanese, before the Australian prime minister’s visit to China, pleading with him to negotiate their father’s release. “They subjected him to more than 300 interrogations, over 18 months, including six months of intense torture … they deprived him of sleep, strapped his wrists and ankles and pinned him to a chair for days at a time, until he couldn’t walk.” https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/05/australian-academic-yang-hengjun-given-suspended-death-sentence-by-chinese-court-writer-wong
Gov Hooka Posted February 7 Posted February 7 I’m curious how this Zionist user would react to the fact that 85 journalists have been murdered by Israel with specific backing by the US, UK, Australia all providing overt military support to ISISrael… https://cpj.org/2024/02/journalist-casualties-in-the-israel-gaza-conflict/amp/ 2 9

Y’all need some mental help. How horrific. 9 3 1
Gov Hooka Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Also curious to know what this Zionist user’s thoughts are on the US’s brutal treatment of Julian Assange considering they have such concerns for journalists 1

If the thread was opened out of concern that a journalist was being targeted then this user doing so should be called out for the fact that they and several of the usual suspects do not apply that same concern to the now nearly hundreds of murdered Palestinian journalists… Pretty relevant to the topic of journalists being targeted in one of the most deadly attacks on journalism in human history 3

Enjoy your off topic warning point 1

May you continue to never escape it. Not EVERYTHING has to be tied to the Israel/Palestine war. And no, while tragic and unfortunate, this is not “one of the greatest atrocities of contemporary history” - you literally have an ongoing Ukrainian/Russian war with over half a MILLION deaths thus far. Just like you’re stating you hope the poster applies that same energy for journalist casualties, I hope you apply that same energy to EVERY ongoing war. I highly doubt that’s the case. You can sympathize without having to steer off topic into a whole different situation. 7 3

I sympathise with the Palestinians 100% and support them but posting a news article on a pop culture forum or commenting 'free palestine' on an instagram reel about cats isn't doing anything, be fr 4 1 1

byzantium Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Regardless of whether he is guilty, any country with the death penalty is morally unjust. 2

But this isn’t a thread about journalists being murdered by Israel, one of many countries which murders journalists. It’s about one specific journalist with Australian nationality being sentenced to death in China on undisclosed charges. Give your thoughts about that or take the warning point and leave. @OP This is really concerning for many reasons, but mostly due to how unprovoked this is. Yes, Australia and China do not have good relations, but I’m not aware of anything major that has happened recently which would cause China to do this…
Communion Posted February 7 Posted February 7 OP sadly opens up their threads to be disrupted given their far-right support of Western regimes and his psst posts celebrating the torture or Julian Assange. 1 1
