Perhaps my dear I made the far reaching, inexplicable link between this thread title and Taylor Swift's recent, so-called, "album of the year" win as an additional source upon which to inform my comment. Outlandish, I know. 2

Okay, “my dear,” but the blurb shared in the OP literally says you don’t have to think that Midnights deserved the award to admit her historically successful year that is associated with the album. 1
byzantium Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Well. Yeah. This is only news for anyone not paying attention.
MasterExpose Posted February 5 Posted February 5 This is Taylor's world and we are just living in it 1 1 1
Kristie Kuwa Posted February 5 Posted February 5 So shes winning AOTY next year again with the new album cause she likely going to have the biggest album again? Good to know

I love how you are always the first one to race into a thread about Taylor and then complain about it Gurl, you are doing this all to yourself. 5 1
BryceG Posted February 5 Posted February 5 (edited) I think it’s the biggest year since Imperial Phase Madonna. Edited February 5 by BryceG 1 1
spiritboy Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Wasn't 21 era bigger than Midnights era? Or at least as big as? Just curious cause she sold like 20-25m albums worldwide.
imabadkid Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I genuinely like TS, she’s one of my most streamed artists but this is getting out of hand. People need to relax
UnusualBoy Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Easily, the closest one we had was Adele with 21 but Taylor passed her.

Gorjesspazze9 Posted February 5 Posted February 5 (edited) I’d believe it. I haven’t felt a superstar like this in like 20 years and I’ve been a swiftie since 2007. She is astronomically bigger than even Lover Era. Edited February 5 by Gorjesspazze9
Chartman Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Combining her entire catalog that, according to Billboard, grossed $530 Million for the label in 2023 as she was the most streamed and best selling artist by far, grossed $1 billion on tour, her $250 Million tour movie, winning big at all these award shows, her massive media coverage including the NFL, TIME POTY cover... yes this was the biggest 12 month period by any artist in the 21st century.

If you only mean cumulative consumption sales/units for an individual album, 21 was bigger than Midnights. But in “era” terms, no, not really, because Taylor’s current era is less the Midnights era and more the Eras era. While Midnights as an individual album wasn’t as big as 21, Taylor had a much bigger holistic year than anyone - even Adele - has had in several decades. Adele’s biggest year ever saw her move something like 9 million units in the US alone, which to be fair is massive and puts her among the biggest years of the Soundscan/Luminate era. But in 2023, Taylor moved more than double that, with 19 million units moved. This is because her whole discography surged so much in consumption and engagement, whereas most artists’ peak years are significantly more concentrated in a single album. Worldwide, Taylor moved like 45 million units - maybe more - in 2023. For reference, that’s almost as much as 21 has moved globally to date since its release, and it’s more than any other 21st century album has done thus far and much more than any other artist has done in one calendar year for this century so far. 1

kayliah Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Can you say it louder. Beyhives and Arianators are not hearing this at the back of the room no pun intended.
TensionThingz Posted February 5 Posted February 5 I enjoyed midnights, but i don't think it was her best output. I think it was rewarded as AOTY because of it's massive success as a whole era. Last year was surreal and i'm happy for her, now i'm hoping for this new body of work to be better.
C-Amber Posted February 5 Posted February 5 Well the numbers and impact doesn't lie, she had crazy 2023. I only wish the hype was equal to Music quality because it ain't, the music she released was mid.
