Personally, I do not think so. While it is a great album in its own right, it is not a great Taylor Swift album. 1989 and folklore both deserved their wins as they were clear benchmarks for her that determined the projectile of her career going forward; 1989 being Taylor’s first ever pop record with songwriting that adopted to a whole new sonic landscape and folklore being her first alternative and songwriter body of work following the arguably mediocre Lover, plus it's mostly mostly fictional proving her sound and pen skills go further than one might imagine.

This is not taking into account the success of either era and I'm not including Fearless in this argument because it's an average album.

Don't get me wrong, Midnights is a strong album, but it makes no leaps that Swift hasn’t dived into before with the possible exception being a few production choices like the distorted vocals on “Midnight Rain”. Plus, the absolute juggernauts she was up against—Lana Del Rey’s Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd and SZA’s SOS prove that Midnights should not have been the Album of the Year winner.

Yes and No

Yes, because it was the biggest and most impactful album of the year, Taylor wrote every song on it and it was very well acclaimed - that's the kind of albums the Grammys tend to reward most consistently

Yes, because Taylor's 2023 was insanely huge and it would have been pretty well deserved for her to sweep all the categories.

No, because there were better quality albums nominated (Lana and SZA), but that unfortunately happens every year and the best quality album pretty much never wins.

No, because she already had three and Midnights is far from her best work, so she could have happily sat this one out

No, because personally I didn't want her to win for all the negativity it would attract. I would rather she won for her next album which I would assume is going to be better

Frankly SZA's album also fit the bill in terms of impact, success, acclaim and songwriting and her album was better. SOS was the obvious choice here. I guess Taylor was just too big last year

why bring lana into the discussion

The meltdown is entertaining.

one look at the users who vote ‘no’ and your can see that most of them are not even Swifties, which this thread is asking

Yes but Lana deserved it more.

It didn't. SOS deserved it.

Yes. It’s 100% deserved. It’s the only album from the nominees that isn’t just a collection of singles and filler in between. It’s actually skipless. Can’t say that about ESV, SOS, Did You Know There’s A Tunnel…, Guts…

It is lyrically, sonically, and conceptually the weakest of all six of her nominated works (and is thus an artistic regression from her previous win, which is exacerbated by the fact that she went from winning for her artistic peak to winning for her worst nominated work). Of course it didn’t deserve to win.

Her previous wins all meant something in the story of her career as an artist. All Midnights has are its numbers and Taylor’s celebrity status, and neither of those things have **** to do with the actual art in question.

An honest, nuanced answer :clap3:

But apparently voicing this opinion makes us Taylor antis!

Midnights is a poor reflection of her songwriting abilities. It’s an album that feels thrown together. It’s like she came off the back of folklore and evermore and thought “let’s dumb this down again for the kids and get a radio hit or two” and also as a reason to justify a new tour. It’s the first album since debut that I don’t think could have been toured alone.

it has some of the lowest lows of her career and is one of Antonoff’s most uninteresting, laboured outings.

It’s a safe choice for the Grammys (sort of a 25 situation) and I imagine that it wasn’t a clean sweep among the 23k voters, probably the result of other comparable albums cancelling each other out with voters split.

I feel the win is probably more of a reflection of the year she has had more-so than the album itself.

Absolutely, the only other album that deserved it was Lana’s. :clap3:

I love how it's only an honest answer if it's a negative one, if I wrote a paragraph stating the opposite, I'm just a sheep.

Op: Swifties

People voting and commenting: OTH who spend they're entire time on ATRL hating everything she does

i love how we assume that swifties has her in their avi. i am a swiftie though not that toxic cult type and I think Midnights did not deserve that. Guts, Tunnels Under or SOS deserved it more. Folklore, Fearless, 1989 is understandable and evermore deserved to win it too

Actually, no. You would still be entitled to that opinion and I would respect it.

The sheep are the ones who think any kind of criticism coming from fans means we don't stan her or hate her.

And there are a lot of other spaces where you'll be thrown out by fans if you liked anything she releases, so it balances itself out

Taylor is having one of the biggest moments in music history and Midnight is also an universal acclaimed body of work. So it is totally deserved of the biggest award of music in this year. :fish1:
Deal with it.

It’s a fine album, I think I just wore it out. I only go back to a couple songs nowadays.

But wow Twitter is ripping her :deadbanana2: I think her overexposure is starting to get annoying to more people.

Y’all have been saying this for years :deadbanana: Twitter is not representative of anything
