Lil Wayne Reportedly Sold Drake & Nicki Minaj's Catalogs With His Masters

we learned Lil Wayne sold his masters to Universal Music Group for $100 million. A new report unveils that Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga’s catalogs under Young Money were sold along with Lil Wayne's catalog. Per Music Business Worldwide, a pending lawsuit filed by Wayne’s manager revealed Young Money’s entire catalog was sold.

Quote

The suit reads, “Plaintiffs are informed and believe… that, subsequent to [Sweeney’s] termination [as Wayne’s manager], specifically in or about June of 2020, Lil Wayne was able to sell the Young Money Masters to Universal Music Group for an excess of $100 million.”

The deal reportedly includes Drake and Nicki’s entire discographies. Each of Drake’s albums released ahead of Scorpion were released under Young Money, (to be clear that’s Thank Me Later to Scorpion). The rest of his projects have dropped under his own imprint, OVO. This year, Drake unveiled Dark Lane Demo Tapes via OVO which has a partnership with Republic Records (owned by UMG).

Nicki’s albums including Queen arrived on behalf of Young Money.

I'm not good w finance, can someone help explain to me just this one question

Can Nicki Minaj and Drake still make money from their past hits after Lil Wayne sold the Young Money catalog?

Also: we never will know this but did Lil Wayne give any of the $100M to Drake / Nicki Minaj/ Tyga

Could it be true, if Lil Wayne had given Nicki several millions and that's still not enough to pay her debts :rip:

---

Another detail

- Drake is no longer releasing under Young Money (he releases via his own imprint OVO)

- Tyga is releasing independently

- Nicki is STILL releasing under Young Money :rip:

Is Nicki still in debt to Young Money :rip: Who else are releasing under Young Money at this point :bird:

Almost no artist owns their masters, to think that they can't make money with their music without their masters is a misconception

So essentially without masters, they make money via

- Sales (physical, digital, streaming)

- Songwriting

- Performing at events / corporate / festivals etc

- Tour

- Endorsement

- Feature fees (ie artists send a verse and collect the money)

Do I miss anything else?

Given that an artist like Nicki who has multiple hits, who can charge a high fee, she also has writing credits on many hit songs. Why is she so broke then , I'm baffled !
