I really don't get this, UMG's basically screwing their less established artists over by swatting down what's basically the only form of promo these days...

This “what is art worth” conversation in mainstream music is endlessly fascinating.

Im on TikToks side. Art is creative and good art cheats capitalism.

and if you’re not interested in being an artist, don’t call yourself one

UMG removed their artists' catalog because of low payouts and are being called greedy for it. If anything they sound like the OTH when Taylor removed her catalog from spofity

oh okay so we're over. with this behavior it's clear that UMG won't back down.

they're not lying when they say this will hurt UMG artists the most.

it already did in 2020 (but most of u didn't pay attention to it cuz tiktok weren't that big. it got removed outside the USA in January and only got back months after) and it will hurt WAYYYYYY more now cuz tiktok is a lot bigger in 2024)

Yes. They will sooner or later be able to copyright that too.

For example, there's countless "People You Know" by my fave UG sounds on the platform

when u click on the sound, most of them is already written "Selena Gomez - People You Know' inside with the song indentified by the label/tiktok.

so of course they won't be able to VANISH the songs completely but it will happen with.... i could guess 90% of the sounds, pretty fast.

Why didn’t TikTok address any of UMG’s concerns in their statement? :rip:

Where in TikTok’s statement did you find any answer? Their statement is “our app is huge, we won’t pay you well, but you should be thankful for the exposure!” :rip:

This doesn’t make any sense. The way UMG promoted and campaigned a lesser known artist before TikTok arrived is the same way they will do it now. TikTok is not the be-all, end-all.

The statement from TikTok is bull. Greed? UMG fought for the proper payout for their artists. The resume of artists under their umbrella warrants a deserving payout.

TikTok doesn’t want to pay. They know it is their loss hence the spicy statement. TikTok is in danger. UMG is not.

The way you can tell this person is a Swiftie by the way they worded it :skull:

This… is the oppposite of what a Swiftie would write given Taylor doesn’t shut up about fair artist compensation and ownership :rip:

I think UMG is too late on this.   I don't feel music uses on the platform are as prevalent as they use to be.   There's way more variety of content now on TikTok than back when it was just people dancing to viral songs.   Even if all the labels pulled their catalogs, TikTok isn't going away.
