Some of the biggest modern pop hits could replace retro classics as a way of keeping pace when performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

First aid trainers often use the beat of Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees as a template for people performing chest compressions to keep blood and oxygen circulating in a patient's body. The song has 100 to 120 beats per minute, the right rhythm for the life-saving procedure. But in an effort to encourage more young people to learn CPR, Red Cross conducted a voting campaign to identify a new song for this purpose.

Dua Lipa's Dance The Night from the hit film Barbie was voted the winner.

Mr Hawkins said first aid needed to be taught more broadly and at a young age. "It should really be taught in high schools as a skill the everybody learns," he said. The time between CPR needing to be performed and emergency services arriving was crucial, he said, adding that you should always call triple-0 first. "The most important thing is with an adult, within three to six minutes a person is going to end up dead or brain damaged," he said. "So if you do nothing else but roll a person over, get their head tipped back and ensure that they're able to breathe, that could save their life."

Ah yes, the next time I perform cpr on someone, I'll make sure to be mumbling 'I don't like that falling feels like flying 'til the bone crush' under my breath as I do it

The irony is rich :deadbanana4:

Tbh I love that it's being used for a good cause, though. CPR is very easy to learn and can triple the chances of someone's survival re: cardiac arrest, so if this introduces a new generation to something life-saving, why not?:gaycat3:
